Representing performance of horizontal flow treatment wetlands: The Tanks In Series (TIS) and the Plug Flow with Dispersion (PFD) approaches and their application to design

M. von Sperling et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a new method to separate hydraulics from kinetics in the design of wetlands. By introducing the traditional concept of N or NTIS as a function of the geometric relationships of the wetland, it can be used to estimate the design of wetlands at the design stage and handle kinetics using the first-order removal rate coefficient (k).

Use of constructed wetlands to prevent overloading of wastewater treatment plants

Claudio Cocozza et al.

Summary: The fluctuation in the number of people in tourist areas affects the wastewater quality and quantity. Constructed wetlands (CWs) aim to simulate natural processes for wastewater treatment and are considered a sustainable system. This study evaluated the effectiveness of in-vessel CWs for supporting wastewater treatment plants during periods of overloading. The results showed promising efficiency of CWs as pre-treatment to reduce overloading.

Modelling and simulation of subsurface horizontal flow constructed wetlands

Roberto Aguado et al.

Summary: Due to poor sanitation systems, a significant amount of wastewater is dumped, posing a threat to public health and causing water stress. However, by purifying and reusing wastewater for irrigation, the efficiency of water management can be improved. Constructed wetlands are a preferred option for grey water purification, especially in developing countries.

Comparison of first-order kinetic models for sewage treatment in horizontal subsurface-flow constructed wetlands

Aline Gomes Ferreira et al.

Summary: There are various techniques for sizing horizontal subsurface-flow constructed wetlands systems, with mathematical models commonly used due to their accurate representation of liquid behavior in these reactors. The P-k-C* model has been used for predicting organic matter removal in CWs, while the model proposed by Chan and Chu has not been explored for this purpose. The comparison of two pseudo-first-order kinetic models showed that both models could provide good predictions of relative remaining concentration, but the Chan and Chu model had higher adjustment coefficients, indicating its potential for modeling and simulating the degradation kinetics of organic matter in wetlands.

Recent research challenges in constructed wetlands for wastewater treatment: A review

Jan Vymazal et al.

Summary: The review paper is based on the analysis of nearly 700 research papers published during 2019 and the first half of 2020, pointing out the increasing diversification of research on artificial wetlands for wastewater treatment. Further studies on the processes and design-related properties of constructed wetlands, especially under full-scale field conditions, are needed to upgrade the technology.

Intensified constructed wetlands for the treatment of municipal wastewater: experimental investigation and kinetic modelling

Tanveer Saeed et al.

Summary: This study examined the removal performance of organics and nutrients in intensified constructed wetlands, specifically tidal flow-based microbial fuel cell (MFC) and tidal flow wetlands receiving municipal wastewater. The results showed high removal rates for ammonia nitrogen, total nitrogen, phosphorus, chemical oxygen demand, and biochemical oxygen demand under different flood periods and media variations, with TN removal reaching the highest percentage under 24-h flood periods. Tidal flow-based MFC wetlands outperformed tidal flow wetlands in TN removal due to supplementary electron production through fuel cell-based organics degradation kinetics.

Modeling the impacts of plants and internal organic carbon on remediation performance in the integrated vertical flow constructed wetland

Xiaoyu Ma et al.

Summary: The study indicates that the integrated vertical flow constructed wetland has favorable performance in removing ammonia and total nitrogen, with significant effects of vegetation on treatment efficiency. Oxygen loss and organic carbon release from plant roots play crucial roles in the treatment processes.

Process-based models for nitrogen dynamics in subsurface flow constructed wetlands: A state-of-the-art review

Yee Yong Tan et al.

Summary: This paper provides an overview of existing models capable of simulating nitrogen dynamics in SSF CWs, categorized into process-dedicated models and Gujer matrix models. Common nitrogen compounds considered in the models include organic nitrogen, ammonium, and nitrate, with typical nitrogen transformation processes such as ammonification, nitrification, and plant uptake. Recommendations and future research directions regarding factors such as microorganism distribution and oxygen release are outlined.

Review of experimental procedures and modelling techniques for flow behaviour and their relation to residence time in constructed wetlands

Ruth Stephenson et al.

Summary: Accurate modelling of constructed wetlands is crucial for their effective use in wastewater treatment. The modelling technique used depends on the goal of the model, and the time contaminants spend in the system is highly dependent on the hydraulic behaviour of the wetland, which can be quantified through tracer studies.
