Chlorination disinfection by-products in Southeast Asia: A review on potential precursor, formation, toxicity assessment, and removal technologies

Muammar Qadafi et al.

Summary: This review discusses the potential precursors, formation, and toxicity of disinfection by-products (DBPs), as well as the available research on their treatment in Southeast Asian countries' water sources. It is found that natural organic matter (NOM) like humic and fulvic acids is the major precursor of DBPs formation, while anthropogenic organic matter (AOM) also plays a significant role when using chlorine for disinfection. NOM and AOMs, including microplastics, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), have been detected in water sources in Southeast Asian countries. Studies have focused on regulated DBPs, but the formation potential of unregulated DBPs and the effectiveness of treatments like conventional coagulation, filtration, adsorption, and ozonation in reducing DBPs formation potential are also discussed.

Yu-qiong Gao et al.

Summary: This study found that ultrasonic pretreatment significantly enhances TCNM formation after chlorination, with BPA degradation predominantly happening at the water-bubble interface. Factors such as dissolved O-2, ultrasonic frequency, and power affect BPA degradation, while HA and HCO3- influence DBP formation.

Formation of trihalomethanes and haloacetic acids from 2,6-dichloro-1,4--benzoquinone during chlorination: Decomposition kinetics, conversion rates, and pathways

Hongyan Zhai et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the decomposition characteristics and transformation potential of 2,6-dichloro-1,4-benzoquinone (2,6-DCBQ) as an intermediate disinfection byproduct (DBP) in water. The results showed that the decomposition of 2,6-DCBQ followed first-order kinetics, and no THMs and HAAs were generated during hydrolysis. However, during chlorination, 2,6-DCBQ rapidly decayed and formed THMs and HAAs.

Matthew A. Bloodgood et al.

Summary: The research aimed to determine the optimal free chlorine contact time to minimize the formation of iodinated disinfection byproducts and NDMA, while keeping regulated THMs and HAAS below legal limits. Results showed that adjusting the free chlorine contact time could effectively control the formation of disinfection byproducts for different water qualities.

Formation of regulated and unregulated disinfection byproducts during chlorination and chloramination: Roles of dissolved organic matter type, bromide, and iodide

Yunsi Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of bromide and iodide on the formation of halogenated disinfection byproducts (DBPs) from various types of dissolved organic matter (DOM) during chlorination and chloramination. The results showed that natural organic matter (NOM) formed more DBPs compared to algal organic matter (AOM) and effluent organic matter (EfOM), and increasing bromide concentrations increased the formation of DBPs. Additionally, AOM favored the formation of iodinated DBPs during chloramination. Increasing prechlorination time reduced the concentration of iodinated DBPs but increased the formation of chlorinated and brominated DBPs.

Using CDOM spectral shape information to improve the estimation of DOC concentration in inland waters: A case study of Andean Patagonian Lakes

L. G. De Stefano et al.

Summary: For the past twenty years, lacustrine dissolved organic matter (DOM) has been a focus in various scientific disciplines due to its significance in carbon biogeochemistry and ecosystem functioning. The development of new satellites now allows for the evaluation of chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) in inland waters, which provides the opportunity to estimate DOM at appropriate spatiotemporal scales. This study evaluates the use of CDOM as a proxy for dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in seven Andean Patagonian lakes, and explores the relationship between CDOM absorption coefficients and DOC. The findings suggest that incorporating CDOM spectral shape information improves the estimation of DOC and has significant implications for environmental management, biogeochemical studies, and future remote sensing applications.

Underlying mechanisms of promoted formation of haloacetic acids disinfection byproducts after indometacin degradation by non-thermal discharge plasma

Yue Liu et al.

Summary: Non-thermal discharge plasma was found to be effective in the removal of Indometacin (IDM). Reactive species such as ·OH, O-2·(-), and O-1(2) were responsible for IDM decomposition. The degradation of IDM resulted in the formation of small molecular alcohols, acids, and amines. The study also revealed that the degradation of IDM inhibited the formation and toxicity of nitrogen-containing DBPs but strengthened the formation of haloacetic acids.

Summary: Dual-chamber microbial fuel cells (MFCs) were used for the simultaneous degradation of nonylphenol and electricity generation. Metagenomic sequencing revealed the dominant microbial community and gene function in the anodic biofilm. The metabolic pathways of nonylphenol were suggested to be divided into the oxidation of aromatic ring and the fission of alkyl chain.

Effects of bromide ion on the formation and toxicity alteration of halonitromethanes from nitrate containing humic acid water during UV/chlor(am)ine disinfection

Tingting Huang et al.

Summary: UV/chloramine is an efficient disinfection method that can reduce the formation and toxicity of halonitromethanes (HNMs). The presence of bromide (Br-) has significant impacts on the formation and toxicity of HNMs during UV/chloramine disinfection. UV/chlorine disinfection has higher formation and toxicity of HNMs compared to UV/chloramine disinfection.

How Much of the Total Organic Halogen and Developmental Toxicity of Chlorinated Drinking Water Might Be Attributed to Aromatic Halogenated DBPs?

Jiarui Han et al.

Summary: The study developed an effective method with ultraperformance liquid chromatography to analyze the DBP mixture from chlorination of bromide-rich raw water, separating them into aliphatic and aromatic fractions. The results showed that aromatic fractions accounted for a significant portion of the TOX and developmental toxicity in the original chlorinated water samples, indicating that the overall developmental toxicity of chlorinated water is mainly attributed to aromatic halo-DBPs with high bioconcentration potential.
