New Bisabolane-Type Sesquiterpenoids from Curcuma longa and Their Anti-Atherosclerotic Activity

Yu-Qin Guo et al.

Summary: This study isolated 10 bisabolane-type sesquiterpenoids from Curcuma longa L., including two pairs of new epimers. One of the compounds significantly inhibited the production of inflammatory mediators and showed inhibitory activity against macrophage-derived foam cell formation. These findings suggest that bisabolane-type sesquiterpenoids have the potential to alleviate the atherosclerosis process by preventing inflammation and inhibiting macrophage foaming.

The use of widely targeted metabolomics profiling to quantify differences in medicinally important compounds from five Curcuma (Zingiberaceae) species

Yuanjun Ye et al.

Summary: This study used UPLC-MS/MS analysis to study the metabolomes of five commonly used Curcuma species in Chinese herbal medicine, revealing differences in metabolites among species. Curcuminoids were found in highest quantities in C. longa, along with a greater diversity of phenolic acids, amino acid derivatives, and flavonoids associated with the curcumin biosynthesis pathway. However, the compound 6-gingerol was found in lower quantities in C. longa compared to other species.

Polyphenolic HRMS Characterization, Contents and Antioxidant Activity of Curcuma longa Rhizomes from Costa Rica

Maria Isabel Quiros-Fallas et al.

Summary: Curcuma longa rhizomes produced in Costa Rica contain a variety of polyphenols, including curcumin, demethoxycurcumin, and bisdemethoxycurcumin, which have been found to possess important biological activities such as anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anticancer, antimicrobial, antihypertensive, and anticoagulant effects. The study also demonstrates that the content of curcuminoids and antioxidant activity vary among different samples from different regions of Costa Rica.
