The potential anti-osteoporotic effect of exercise-induced increased preptin level in ovariectomized rats

Khaled Abdelfattah Abulfadle et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of estradiol administration and moderate exercise training on osteoporotic changes in ovariectomized rats. The results showed that both estradiol therapy and moderate exercise training significantly improved bone resorption and formation biomarkers, reduced pro-inflammatory cytokines, and increased bone osteopontin expression. These findings suggest that combined estradiol therapy and moderate exercise training may be a promising therapeutic approach for reducing postmenopausal osteoporosis.

Novel insights on the effect of sclerostin on bone and other organs

Timothy J. Dreyer et al.

Summary: Sclerostin, a key regulator of bone homeostasis, is expressed by osteocytes and other cells, potentially playing a role in multiple organs. This article discusses recent research on sclerostin's effect on bone, cartilage, muscle, liver, kidney, cardiovascular system, and immune system. It highlights its role in diseases such as osteoporosis and myeloma bone disease, and the development of sclerostin as a therapeutic target. Recent discoveries include its potential use in treating osteoarthritis, osteosarcoma, and sclerosteosis. The article emphasizes progress in the field but also identifies remaining knowledge gaps.

Review of Novel Potential Insulin Resistance Biomarkers in PCOS Patients-The Debate Is Still Open

Jagoda Kruszewska et al.

Summary: Research on proteins and peptides that regulate metabolism as potential markers for insulin resistance in conditions such as diabetes, obesity, and PCOS has gained interest. PCOS, an endocrine disorder associated with hyperandrogenemia and ovulation failure, often presents metabolic abnormalities. Studies have shown decreased levels of nesfastin-1, myonectin, omentin, and neudesin in PCOS patients, while increased levels of other agents like preptin, gremlin-1, neuregulin-4, xenopsin-related peptide, xenin-25, and galectin-3 were observed. However, contradictory findings exist, particularly for lipocalin-2. Further research is needed to confirm these hypotheses and understand the role of these factors in PCOS-related metabolic complications.

Genetic ablation of the preptin-coding portion of Igf2 impairs pancreatic function in female mice

E. J. Buckels et al.

Summary: This study describes a mouse model in which the preptin-coding portion of the Igf2 gene has been genetically ablated. The mice do not exhibit reduced size at birth associated with Igf2 knockout, suggesting that IGF2 functionality is maintained. However, there is a change in the processing of mature Igf2. Female knockout mice show diminished glucose-stimulated insulin secretion, while the insulin response in males is not different from wild type.

Summary: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a prevalent and complex disease, and chronic kidney disease-mineral bone disorders (CKD-MBD) are complications associated with the progression of CKD. This review focuses on the abnormalities in serum levels of various biomarkers in CKD-MBD and examines the prognostic association between CKD-MBD and the increased risk for cardiovascular events, mortality, and CKD progression. Specific treatments for CKD-MBD are also presented.

Summary: The study showed that high-intensity interval training (HIIT) and isocaloric continuous endurance training (CETFAT) have similar effects on improving the insulin resistance index of prediabetes patients. Additionally, the intensity and type of exercise were found to be crucial factors in changing irisin and preptin concentrations.

Leptin and Obesity: Role and Clinical Implication

Milan Obradovic et al.

Summary: Leptin, a peptide hormone, regulates food intake, body mass, and reproductive function, playing a crucial role in fetal growth, immune responses, angiogenesis, and lipolysis. Leptin resistance can lead to reduced satiety, overconsumption of nutrients, and increased body mass, potentially causing obesity. Combining leptin therapies with sensitizers may help overcome resistance and treat obesity effectively.

Is Preptin a New Bone Metabolism Parameter in Hemodialysis Patients?

Malgorzata Kaluzna et al.

Summary: This study found that in hemodialyzed patients, preptin levels were positively correlated with HD vintage and parathormone levels, and negatively correlated with indicators such as lumbar spine bone density. The significant correlations of preptin with PTH and osteocalcin suggest its potential importance in indirectly measuring bone turnover in HD patients.
