Freshwater fish as hosts for parasites in Australia: How much do we really know?

Diane P. Barton et al.

Summary: Australia's freshwater fish have a diverse range of parasites, but there is limited knowledge about most species. The impact of introduced fish species and their parasites on native species is largely unknown. This review provides an overview of the current knowledge of parasite infections in both introduced and native freshwater fish in Australia. It reveals that only a third of native fish species and almost two-thirds of introduced fish have been reported as hosts for parasites. There are significant gaps in knowledge regarding the types and impacts of parasites on Australian freshwater fish, highlighting the need for collaboration between fish biologists and fish parasitologists.

Neophobic behavioural responses of parasitised fish to a potential predator and baited hook

Rafael Freire et al.

Summary: This study investigated the links between parasite infection, anti-predator behavior, and neophobia towards novel food in fish. The findings showed that infected fish were less likely to approach a predator but exhibited reduced neophobia towards a baited hook. These results suggest that parasite-induced changes in fish behavior are complex and may be modulated by hunger levels and reduced locomotion.

Do parasites influence behavioural traits of wild and hatchery-reared Murray cod, Maccullochella peelii?

Shokoofeh Shamsi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between parasite infection and behavioral traits in juvenile Murray cod, finding that parasite infections can influence fish behavior. Differences in behavioral responses were observed between wild and hatchery fish. Parasite infection, fish source, and parasite type were identified as factors that could affect fish behavior.

Wild fish as reservoirs of parasites on Australian Murray cod farms

Shokoofeh Shamsi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the occurrence of parasites in undesirable fish species on Australian Murray cod farms, revealing that some fish carry multiple parasites with potential harm. The results provide important insights into the potential risks to Murray cod populations in farm systems and other fish in natural water resources where Murray cod are released.

Characterization of Clinostomum sp. (Trematoda: Clinostomidae) infecting cormorants in south-eastern Australia

Shokoofeh Shamsi et al.

Summary: This study identified Clinostomum parasites from cormorants in inland Australia, which are similar to Clinostomum sp. previously found in fish but distinct from C. complanatum. The ITS sequences obtained in the study suggest that these parasites may be C. phalacrocoracis, which has not been reported in Australia before. Further studies are needed to fully describe the specific identity of these parasites.
