Drug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii: From molecular mechanisms to potential therapeutics (Review)

Hao-Jia Wu et al.

Summary: Bacterial drug resistance, specifically the resistance of Acinetobacter baumannii, is an urgent problem in modern clinical practices as it threatens the lives and health of patients. The increasing drug resistance rate limits the availability of suitable antibiotics and worsens patient prognosis. Studying the molecular mechanism of drug resistance in Acinetobacter baumannii provides a theoretical basis for the development of antibiotics and novel treatment methods to combat drug-resistant bacteria.

Co-Occurrence of mcr-1 and Carbapenem Resistance in Avian Pathogenic E. coli Serogroup O78 ST95 from Colibacillosis-Infected Broiler Chickens

Muhammad Usman et al.

Summary: This study aimed to detect carbapenem-resistant co-harboring mcr-1 avian pathogenic E. coli (APEC) in broiler chickens infected with colibacillosis using molecular techniques. Results showed that 37% of the isolates were confirmed as APEC, with 8.4% found to be carbapenem-resistant APEC, and 38% of the carbapenem-resistant APEC co-harbored the mcr-1 gene. Improper use of antibiotics in poultry production systems is contributing to the emergence of CR-APEC co-harboring the mcr-1 gene.

Convergence of Biofilm Formation and Antibiotic Resistance in Acinetobacter baumannii Infection

Subhasree Roy et al.

Summary: Acinetobacter baumannii is a leading cause of nosocomial infections due to its ability to acquire antibiotic resistance genes and form biofilms. This review discusses the evolution of antibiotic resistance, mechanisms of biofilm formation, infections associated with A. baumannii colonization on medical devices, and strategies for preventing biofilm formation.

Contribution of RND-Type Efflux Pumps in Reduced Susceptibility to Biocides in Acinetobacter baumannii

Christina Meyer et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of differential expression levels of RND-type efflux pumps AdeABC and AdeIJK on the susceptibility of multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii to commonly used biocides. The results showed that overexpression of AdeABC correlated with greater survival after exposure to certain biocides. These findings highlight the role of efflux pumps in the survival of A. baumannii when exposed to residual concentrations of biocides.

Quaternary ammonium compounds in hypersensitivity reactions

Marine Peyneau et al.

Summary: Quaternary ammonium compounds (QAC) are commonly used disinfectants, antiseptics, preservatives, and detergents due to their antibacterial property. Their amphiphilic structure allows them to intercalate into microorganism surfaces, inducing an unstable and porous membrane that explains their antimicrobial activity towards bacteria, fungi, and viruses. However, the sensitizing property of QAC is still controversial, and the precise mechanisms underlying the sensitization effect are still under investigation.

Update on Multidrug Resistance Efflux Pumps in Acinetobacter spp.

Vanessa Kornelsen et al.

Summary: Efflux pumps in Acinetobacter spp. play a significant role in antimicrobial resistance, with six families of clinical relevance. Recent research has focused on understanding the role of efflux pumps in bacterial resistance and physiology, particularly the expansive substrate profiles of RND efflux pumps.

Relationship between the Biofilm-Forming Capacity and Antimicrobial Resistance in Clinical Acinetobacter baumannii Isolates: Results from a Laboratory-Based In Vitro Study

Matthew Gavino Donadu et al.

Summary: The study aimed to establish a possible relationship between biofilm-forming capacity and antibiotic resistance in clinical Acinetobacter baumannii isolates. Results showed that there was a numerical connection between biofilm formation and antibiotic resistance, but no statistically significant association between resistance to individual antibiotics and biofilm formation. Further experiments are needed to evaluate the role of biofilms in the pathogenesis of A. baumannii infections.

Biocide Use in the Antimicrobial Era: A Review

Imogen Anne Jones et al.

Summary: Biocides are commonly used in healthcare and industry to control infections and microbial contamination. Ineffective disinfection and misuse of biocides can lead to the survival of microorganisms on surfaces, contributing to the transmission of infectious agents. Understanding the modes of action and efficacy of biocides is crucial for their rational use and development, especially in an era where microorganisms are increasingly resistant to chemical antimicrobial agents.

Acinetobacter baumannii: An Ancient Commensal with Weapons of a Pathogen

Meysam Sarshar et al.

Summary: Acinetobacter baumannii is a life-threatening pathogen associated with community-acquired and nosocomial infections, mainly pneumonia. The rise in antibiotic-resistant strains reduces effective therapies and increases mortality. Comparative genomic studies have unraveled the innate and acquired virulence factors of A. baumannii.

Biocide-tolerance and antibiotic-resistance in community environments and risk of direct transfers to humans: Unintended consequences of community-wide surface disinfecting during COVID-19?

Bo Chen et al.

Summary: Studies have shown that the persistent use of chemical disinfectants during COVID-19 may lead to the growth of biocide tolerant and antibiotic-resistant bacteria on common touch surfaces, posing risks of direct transmission to humans in public settings. It is important to address these risks and implement strategies to mitigate them effectively.
