COVID-19 Myocarditis: An Emerging Clinical Conundrum

Ivana Okor et al.

Summary: COVID-19 not only affects the lungs but also has potential cardiovascular complications, such as arrhythmias, heart failure, and myocarditis. Myocarditis is an inflammatory disease of the heart muscle, often caused by viral infections and resulting from the interaction between the virus and the host's immune system. Although several reports have linked COVID-19 with myocarditis, the exact mechanism of cardiac injury is still under investigation.

Eicosanoid signalling blockade protects middle-aged mice from severe COVID-19

Lok-Yin Roy Wong et al.

Summary: This article describes the research on therapeutic drugs against new variants of SARS-CoV-2. The study suggests that the elderly population is at higher risk during infection, and protecting aged animals from severe diseases can be achieved by inhibiting specific inflammatory pathways.

Genome-wide study of the effect of blood collection tubes on the cell-free DNA methylome

Ruben Van Paemel et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the impact of blood collection tube type and time delay on cfDNA methylation analysis, finding that all preservation tubes performed similarly on quality metrics. A significant increase in cfDNA concentration and the fraction derived from NK cells was observed after a 72-hour time delay in EDTA tubes.

Antihypertensive drug treatment and susceptibility to SARS-CoV-2 infection in human PSC-derived cardiomyocytes and primary endothelial cells

Jessika Iwanski et al.

Summary: This study observed significant differences in protein coding genes related to immunity, viral response, and cell structure in human pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes and human endothelial cells exposed to SARS-CoV-2. However, pre-treatment with two commonly used antihypertensive medications did not alter the susceptibility of these cells to SARS-CoV-2 infection. These findings suggest that antihypertensive drug treatment alone may not impact SARS-CoV-2 infection.
