Molecular characterization of Prototheca in 11 symptomatic dogs

Cutaneous Protothecosis with Meningitis Due to Prototheca wickerhamii in an Immunocompetent Teenager: Case Report and Literature Review

Summary: Human protothecosis is a rare infection caused by Prototheca spp., usually presenting as localized infection and rarely occurring systemically in immunocompromised patients. This report describes a case of cutaneous protothecosis and meningitis caused by Prototheca wickerhamii in an immunocompetent teenager who had full-body tattoos at the time of infection, which is the first report isolating P. wickerhamii from both skin tissue and cerebrospinal fluid. The data from this report will contribute to a better understanding of this pathogen and optimal treatment strategies.

Prototheca-ID: a web-based application for molecular identification of Prototheca species

Summary: Prototheca is a genus of unicellular, achlorophyllous, yeast-like algae widely distributed in the environment, known to infect vertebrates including humans. Protothecosis can be clinically challenging and treatment-resistant, requiring accurate identification through DNA sequencing. Current limitations in sequence databases make Prototheca identification difficult and inconclusive, with a lack of bioinformatic tools for data processing and analysis. The introduction of Prototheca-ID aims to address these challenges by providing a user-friendly, web-based application for fast and reliable speciation of Prototheca isolates.
