Cyclic and Linear Peptides Containing Alternate WW and RR Residues as Molecular Cargo Delivery Tools

Lois Kim et al.

Summary: This study reports the synthesis and biological evaluation of a series of peptides containing tryptophan and arginine residues as molecular transporters. Among them, the peptide [WWRR](5) showed the highest cellular uptake of cargo molecules, indicating its potential as an effective molecular transporter. The study also revealed that C4 can achieve cellular internalization through endocytosis and energy-independent mechanisms.

Combination of Amphiphilic Cyclic Peptide [R4W4] and Levofloxacin against Multidrug-Resistant Bacteria

Muhammad Imran Sajid et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the significant antimicrobial activity of the physical mixture of cyclic [R4W4] peptide and levofloxacin against various drug-resistant bacterial strains, and it is more effective than the covalent conjugate. The cytotoxicity of the cyclic [R4W4] peptide and levofloxacin conjugates is lower in breast cancer cells and normal kidney cells. The time-kill kinetic study shows rapid bactericidal action of the combination of [R4W4] and levofloxacin against drug-resistant bacteria.

Isolation of Mycobacterium avium and other nontuberculous mycobacteria in chickens and captive birds in peninsular Malaysia

Abdul Sattar et al.

Summary: This study identified the occurrence of Mycobacterium avium in chickens and captive birds in selected states of Peninsular Malaysia. PCR was found to be a rapid and cost-effective method for detection of M. avium, but the culture of avian feces should still be utilized as a reference test for diagnosis of avian tuberculosis.

Summary: The study revealed that NTM was mainly identified in elderly patients, with Mycobacterium avium being the most frequent species. Significant risk factors for reinfection included smoking, COPD, and bronchiectasis, with the latter being statistically associated with reinfection.

Genetic Involvement of Mycobacterium avium Complex in the Regulation and Manipulation of Innate Immune Functions of Host Cells

Min-Kyoung Shin et al.

Summary: MAC, a collection of nontuberculous mycobacterial species, are ubiquitous and opportunistic pathogens. The incidence of infectious diseases caused by MAC is increasing globally due to complications in treatment and the lack of understanding genetic traits and pathogenesis differences among MAC species. Despite genetic similarities, different mycobacterial species in MAC can cause diseases to a variety of hosts along with a distinct spectrum of disease.

Exploring Potential COPD Immunosuppression Pathways Causing Increased Susceptibility for MAC Infections among COPD Patients

Shafaa Munjal et al.

Summary: Despite the decline in tuberculosis cases in the United States, infections caused by Mycobacterium avium Complex (MAC) have been steadily increasing. MAC is an opportunistic pathogen that is prevalent in the environment and is especially common in patients with preexisting respiratory conditions, such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). The primary cause of susceptibility to MAC infection in COPD patients is chronic inflammation of lung tissue due to smoking, but there is a lack of research on the pathophysiological mechanisms involved.
