An experimental investigation of subcooled pool boiling on downward-facing surfaces with microchannels

Zhijie Gao et al.

Summary: Upward-facing pooling boiling enhancement employing micro-structure has been extensively studied, yet rarely applied in microgravity or nuclear industry. To solve the challenge of vapor removal and liquid replenishment without buoyancy force, this study introduced additional pressure induced by microchannels to achieve spontaneous bubble removal and liquid replenishment. Experimental results showed that channeled surfaces had a lower onset of nucleate boiling superheat and significantly improved heat transfer coefficients compared to plain surfaces. The proposed enhancement mechanism, which relied on separate vapor-liquid flow paths, demonstrated high and consistent heat transfer performance under various pressure conditions and even in downward-facing situations.

Review of solidification and melting performance of phase change materials in the presence of magnetic field, rotation, tilt angle, and vibration

Farhan Lafta Rashid et al.

Summary: This review discusses the effects of magnetic field, rotation, tilt angle, and vibration on the heat performance of PCMs and NEPCMs. The orientation and design of the heat exchanger are found to have a significant effect on the melting/solidification performance. Increasing the magnetic number and decreasing the Hartmann number improve the melting and solidification performance, while rotating the cavity in a counter direction of buoyancy flow improves the melting rate/time. The optimum tilting angle varies depending on the thickness of PCM layers, and the vibration effect depends on the frequency and amplitude/frequency.

Melting performance of nano-enhanced phase change materials in a triple-tube heat exchanger with zigzag-shaped tubes

Mohamed Boujelbene et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the melting behavior of nano-enhanced phase change materials (NePCM) in a triple-tube heat exchanger with a zigzag-shape channel configuration. By numerically simulating a zigzag tube with different angles and heights and comparing the results with a conventional triple-tube heat exchanger, the performance of the proposed geometry is assessed. Cu, CuO, Al2O3, and Ag nanoparticles are used to improve the thermal conductivity of NePCMs. The main finding is that using a middle zigzag tube significantly improves the melting performance of a triple-tube heat exchanger.

Progress and key challenges in catalytic combustion of lean methane

Xiangbo Feng et al.

Summary: Methane, as a primary type of clean energy, is the second most important greenhouse gas after CO2. Large quantities of lean methane are emitted into the atmosphere during coal mine, oil, and natural gas production, leading to energy loss and greenhouse effect. Utilizing lean methane is challenging, but catalytic combustion is a vital pathway to reduce emissions. This review discusses the development, challenges, and prospects of catalytic lean methane combustion technology, with a focus on heat management from the perspective of material design and reactor configuration.

Investigation of Heat Transfer Enhancement in a Triple Tube Latent Heat Storage System Using Circular Fins with Inline and Staggered Arrangements

Xinguo Sun et al.

Summary: In this study, the use of circular fins with staggered distribution in a vertical triple-tube heat exchanger was investigated to improve the thermal response rates of PCM. Results showed that staggered fin distribution significantly increased the rates of PCM melting, with potential for 37.2% increase in melting rate and 59.1% increase in heat charging rate. Furthermore, the use of lengthy fins in the vertical direction of the storage unit along with smaller thickness resulted in faster melting rates, indicating a positive role of natural convection.

Summary: This study examines laminar natural convection flow and entropy production within a vertical porous annulus filled with nanofluids. The inclusion of nanoparticles improves heat transfer and increases total entropy production, while Darcy and porosity numbers affect flow structure and entropy generation. Increasing Da and epsilon values result in higher average Nusselt and Be numbers, while the opposite leads to a decrease in these parameters.
