Evaluation of different melting performance enhancement structures in a shell-and-tube latent heat thermal energy storage system

Ruihuan Ge et al.

Summary: This study numerically investigates two principal thermal enhancement techniques, finned tubes and conductive metal foams, in a phase change energy storage system. The simulation predictions are validated by experimental results with topology optimized fins. The results show that compared to the configuration without enhancement, the thermal energy storage rates can be increased by 3.3-5.8 times using these thermal enhancement techniques. It is found that topology optimized fins achieve the best performance, but their economic efficiency is dependent on the unit price ratio.

Solar air heating systems with latent heat storage-A review of state-of-the-art

Ashutosh Sharma et al.

Summary: This article thoroughly reviews solar air heating systems (SAHS) with thermal storage, particularly latent heat storage (LHS). The integrated collector storage (ICS) and non-integrated collector storage (NICS) type SAHS have been extensively studied and compared. The results show that NICS-SAHS outperforms ICS-SAHS in terms of thermal losses, thermal storage capacity, and flexibility with better heat transfer fluid.

Innovative ladder-shaped fin design on a latent heat storage device for waste heat recovery

Zhan Liu et al.

Summary: The use of ladder-shaped fins in a latent heat energy storage system accelerates the melting process and improves the phase change efficiency. Experimental and numerical modeling results show that the ladder-shaped fins optimize the melting channel of the phase change material more effectively than straight fins, leading to significant reduction in melting time.

Effects of various types of nanomaterials on PCM melting process in a thermal energy storage system for solar cooling application using CFD and MCMC methods

Mashhour A. Alazwari et al.

Summary: This study aims to improve the thermophysical properties of latent heat thermal energy storage (LHTES) systems by adding various nano-additives to accelerate the melting process. The experimental results show that adding carbon-based nanomaterials significantly reduces the melting time, while metal nanoparticles impair the melting performance. The addition of metal oxide nanoparticles does not provide any substantial advantage to the system.
