A Mediated Li-S Flow Battery for Grid-Scale Energy Storage

Melissa L. Meyerson et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates a scalable, high efficiency, membrane-less Li-S redox flow battery by combining the redox-targeting scheme with the engineered Li solid electrolyte interphase (SEI). The results suggest that the fundamental Li-S chemistry and SEI engineering strategies can be adapted to the hybrid redox flow battery architecture, offering a potential pathway for inexpensive, scalable, and safe MWh scale Li-S energy storage.

Perspective-Does the Sand Equation Reliably Predict the Onset of Morphological Evolution in Lithium Electrodeposition?

Ruwani N. Wasalathanthri et al.

Summary: This perspective article investigates whether the classical Sand equation accurately predicts the onset of morphological evolution in lithium electrodeposition under galvanostatic metal electrodeposition. Experimental results reveal significant discrepancies between Sand's times and observed lithium dendrite onset times at various lithium electrodeposition current densities. To explain this discrepancy, the authors propose a modified Sand's approach that considers transient multi-phase diffusion in the liquid electrolyte and the solid-electrolyte-interphase (SEI) layer, leading to improved accuracy in predicting the morphology onset time in lithium electrodeposition.

Hierarchically Constructed ZnO/Co3O4 Nanoheterostructures Synergizing Dendrite Inhibition and Polysulfide Conversion in Lithium-Sulfur Battery

Kaiping Zhu et al.

Summary: A bifunctional composite of heterostructured ZnO/Co3O4 nanocrystals on a 3D hierarchical reduced graphene oxide/carbon nanotubes skeleton (ZCNC@GC) is reported in this study, which shows promising results in inhibiting polysulfide shuttling and promoting uniform Li deposition. The composite also establishes a smooth and hierarchical conductive pathway to accelerate charge transfer, leading to improved rate performance and stability in Li-S batteries.

Recent Developments in Dendrite-Free Lithium-Metal Deposition through Tailoring of Micro- and Nanoscale Artificial Coatings

Melissa L. Meyerson et al.

Summary: Forty years after the failed introduction of rechargeable lithium-metal batteries and 30 years after the successful commercialization of the lower capacity, graphite-anode based lithium-ion battery by Sony, demand for higher energy density batteries is leading to reinvestigation of the problem of dendrite growth that makes the metallic lithium anodes unsafe. One strategy to mitigate dendrite growth is to deposit thin, tailored, corrosion-passivating coatings on the metallic lithium, instead of allowing the metal to spontaneously react with the organic electrolyte solution to form its passivating solid electrolyte interface (SEI).
