Experimental and numerical study on the thermocline behavior of packed-bed storage tank with sensible fillers

Baoshan Xie et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of inlet configuration and insulation on the thermocline expansion in a lab-scale thermal energy storage tank. The results show that injecting flow causes temperature non-uniformity and thermocline expansion at the near-entrance region of the tank, but has limited effect on the overall performance. Good insulation reduces thermocline thickness and improves energy efficiency and capacity ratio.

Proposal of a thermocline molten salt storage tank for district heating and cooling

A. Abanades et al.

Summary: Thermal energy storage is crucial for district heating and cooling facilities, especially when relying on intermittent energy sources like solar power. Traditional water storage is inadequate for medium temperature processes, but other technologies such as molten salt mixtures can be used. This paper proposes the use of an innovative molten salt mixture with a lower melting temperature to increase the solar share in DHC installations. The storage allows for the application of solar technologies in supplying heat to DHC services that would otherwise require boilers.

Optimized flow distributor for stabilized thermal stratification in a single-medium thermocline storage tank: A numerical and experimental study

Wanruo Lou et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the impact of flow injection on the temperature stratification inside single-medium thermocline storage tanks. A new type of fluid diffuser, the Ring-Opening Plate Distributors (ROPDs), is utilized to maintain stable thermocline evolution during dynamic charging or discharging. Experimental results show that ROPDs improve the charging and discharging efficiency of the storage tank. The study also examines the effects of flow rate and temperature on local temperature profiles and energy efficiency.

Cyclic performance of cascaded latent heat thermocline energy storage systems for high-temperature applications

ELSaeed Saad ELSihy et al.

Summary: The study investigated the cyclic performance of cascaded latent heat thermocline energy storage systems for high-temperature applications. It found that the system performs better when the volume fraction of bottom PCM is higher than top PCM, and the combination of PCMs with high latent heat achieves the best results. Additionally, smaller capsule size also leads to optimal performance.

Assessing the impact of a novel hemispherical diffuser on a single-tank sensible thermal energy storage system

Dipti Ranjan Parida et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of an inlet inertial jet on the thermal blending of hot and cold heat transfer fluid in a single tank sensible thermal energy storage system through numerical simulations. The results show that a hemispherical diffuser leads to the minimum buoyancy-driven mixing and improves the thermocline performance compared to alternative diffusers. Furthermore, experiments with a saline-freshwater combination demonstrate the working of the proposed diffuser.

Characterising entrainment in fountains and negatively buoyant jets

L. Milton-McGurk et al.

Summary: The present study investigates both stages of turbulent fountain flow and finds that the velocity and buoyancy profiles in the initial negatively buoyant jet (NBJ) stage and the fully developed fountain stage differ. The fountains have a negative entrainment coefficient, indicating a net radial outflow of fluid from the inner flow (IF) to the outer flow (OF). The inflow component is proportional to the axial IF velocity, while the outflow depends on the local Richardson number (Ri).

Summary: The potential of thermal storages in multi-energy networks is highlighted due to the increasing use of renewable energies. Meta modeling, based on simulation data from previous physical modeling, is proposed as an alternative to overcome the challenges of integrating physical models into the management of multi-energy networks. The developed meta model shows a significant reduction in calculation time compared to physical models while still providing accurate estimations.

D. Le Roux et al.

Summary: Packed-bed storage is being considered as a promising solution for thermal energy storage in industrial plants. This study aims to optimize the environmental footprint, costs, and exergy efficiency of a thermocline thermal energy storage. The results show that by favoring economic performance, the environmental impact of the storage can be reduced. The use of ceramic from fly ashes as a filler material shows similar exergy and economic performance compared to machined ceramic, but with a greatly reduced environmental footprint.

Thermocline dynamics in a thermally stratified water tank under different operation modes

Qiong Li et al.

Summary: This study discusses the mixing mechanism and the variation trend of thermocline in the mantled solar heat storage tank in the simultaneous charging/discharging mode. The research reveals that the mixing is more severe in the early stage of water use and the thermocline thickness increases and then decreases over time. However, the mixing state is relatively stable during the whole water use period and the change rate of thermocline thickness is smaller.

Improved thermocline initialization through optimized inlet design for single-tank thermal energy storage systems

Julius Weiss et al.

Summary: Single tank thermal energy storage systems based on the thermocline concept have been extensively researched as a cost-effective alternative to molten salt double tank storage systems. However, the discrepancy between theoretical models and actual flow distribution has been identified as a reason for the inability to achieve high cyclic efficiencies predicted in simulations. The optimal placement and geometric characteristics of fluid distributors in the tank play a crucial role in minimizing the initial thermocline thickness and optimizing thermal stratification.
