A review and prospective of fin design to improve heat transfer performance of latent thermal energy storage

Shengqi Zhang et al.

Summary: Latent Thermal Energy Storage (TES) is recognized as a promising heat storage technology. Specifically, the development and optimization of finned-tube TES systems, including different fin shapes and additional enhancement techniques, are reviewed to provide fundamental information for further advancements. The review indicates that longitudinal and annular fins have been the focus, while helical fins and topologically optimized fins show great research potential. Additionally, it is suggested that additional enhancement techniques can further improve the heat transfer rate of PCMs in the TES system.

An experimental and numerical study on phase change material melting rate enhancement for a horizontal semi-circular shell and tube thermal energy storage system

Amit Kumar et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that configuring the outer shell of a circular latent heat thermal energy storage unit into a semi-circular shape can enhance the melting rate of phase change materials. The semi-circular heat storage unit shows better melting performance compared to the circular one, melting the phase change material in almost half the time. Additionally, the thermal energy storage rate and total stored energy are higher in the semi-circular latent heat thermal energy storage system compared to the circular one.

Comprehensive energy, exergy, and economic analysis of the scenario of supplementing pumped thermal energy storage (PTES) with a concentrated photovoltaic thermal system

Burak Kursun et al.

Summary: The thermal integration pumped thermal energy storage (TI(CPV/T)-PTES) system, which utilizes a photovoltaic thermal system (CPV/T), was evaluated in terms of thermodynamics and economics, and showed different electricity storage capacities and round-trip efficiencies depending on the design parameters. The lowest levelized cost of storage (LCOS) for the system was achieved at 0.278 $/kWh(-1). Comparative analysis also demonstrated that the TI(CPV/T)-PTES system had a lower LCOS value compared to Li-ion and VRF battery technologies for certain parameter values.

Performance enhancement of phase change materials in triplex-tube latent heat energy storage system using novel fin configurations

Peiliang Yan et al.

Summary: Phase change material has great potential as an energy storage material in thermal energy storage systems, but its low thermal conductivity limits its applications. This study investigates the effect of different Y-shaped fin structures and HTF on the melting time of phase change material. The results show that adjustments to the fin structure can effectively reduce the melting time under certain operating conditions.

Thermo-economic analysis of the pumped thermal energy storage with thermal integration in different application scenarios

Shuozhuo Hu et al.

Summary: Pumped thermal energy storage (PTES) technology is studied in this research, revealing a trade-off relationship between storage efficiency, cost, and capacity. Integrating additional low-grade heat sources can enhance the performance coefficient of heat pumps, and optimizing system parameters can improve efficiency and reduce costs. Waste heat is identified as the most suitable heat source for PTES integration.
