Solar pyrolysis of biomass- part II: The physicochemical structure evolution of char

Dian Zhong et al.

Summary: In this study, dynamic solar pyrolysis experiments were conducted on willow pellets to investigate the physicochemical structure evolution of char. The results showed that the reflectivity of char surface initially decreased and then rebounded, while the specific surface area decreased with reaction time. Three-dimensional scanning revealed unique hierarchical layers in the char structure. The chemical structure evolution resulted in the formation of aromatic rings and enhanced surface ordering. The differences in structure can be attributed to the poor heat and mass transfer properties of the lamellar structure.

Investigation of the effects of shell geometry and tube eccentricity on thermal energy storage in shell and tube heat exchangers

Vahid Safari et al.

Summary: In this research, the combined effects of the shell geometry and downward eccentricity of the heat transfer tube on the melting behavior of the paraffin wax in shell and tube heat exchangers were investigated. The results showed that increasing the eccentricity of the tube accelerated the melting rate, but there was an optimum eccentricity factor for each geometry beyond which the melting rate reduced. It was also found that increasing the eccentricity factor prolonged the convection-dominated melting time and shortened the conduction-dominated melting time.

Melting and solidification of phase change materials in metal foam filled thermal energy storage tank: Evaluation on gradient in pore structure

Gang Liu et al.

Summary: This research proposes a novel energy storage tank filled with phase change materials embedded in graded metal foams to improve melting/solidification efficiency. Experimental and numerical results demonstrate that gradient design in pore density does not affect the melting and solidification procedures, while graded porosity notably helps the melting and solidification processes. The optimal gradient in porosity reduces the overall cycle of melting and solidification time by 10.9% compared to the uniform filling pattern.

Numerical investigation and optimal design of partially filled sectorial metal foam configuration in horizontal latent heat storage unit

Hongyang Zuo et al.

Summary: The study shows that increasing the filling angle can enhance the melting rate, but the increase rate will decrease significantly when the angle reaches a certain value. Increasing the thickness of the configuration deteriorates cost performance, but excessive reduction in thickness will restrict the enhancement of the melting rate. The ladder shape design is more advantageous in reducing the full melting time and the amount of metal foam used.
