Meshfree Digital Image Correlation Using Element Free Galerkin Method: Theory, Algorithm and Validation

B. Chen et al.

Summary: A new meshfree digital image correlation (MF-DIC) method using element free Galerkin method (EFGM) is proposed for deformation measurement. It provides better spatial resolution and measurement resolution compared to traditional methods, and offers continuous displacement and strain fields directly from scattered nodes without relying on subsets or elements. Experimental results show excellent performance in displacement and strain measurements.

Buckling of stretched disks-With comparisons and extensions to auxetics

Saeideh Faghfouri et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the instability behavior of thin elastic circular disks under two concentrated edge loads, revealing that the variation of the Poisson's ratio affects the stability behavior of the disks. Significant differences are found between disks under compression and tension, with changes in critical load intensities and buckling modes. The results are valuable for researchers in structural stability and engineers in lightweight design, with potential applications in sensors, actuators, flexible electronics, and biological tissues.

Taut domains in transversely isotropic electro-magneto-active thin membranes

Aman Khurana et al.

Summary: Actuation devices made of smart polymers often face instabilities that can negatively impact their performance and lead to device failure. Wrinkling instability is commonly observed in smart polymers when subjected to electric or magnetic fields. Wrinkles can be both beneficial and detrimental, depending on the application. This study focuses on understanding the factors influencing thin films' pull-in and wrinkling instabilities and proposes a model to predict these instabilities based on electro-magneto-mechanical principles. The findings suggest that the level and direction of transverse isotropy can be modified to control the extent of pull-in and wrinkling instabilities.

Two-dimensional crystals on adhesive substrates subjected to uniform transverse pressure

Zhaohe Dai et al.

Summary: In this study, we investigate the formation of spontaneous bubbles when a two-dimensional crystal is transferred to a substrate with trapped gases or liquids. Through a theoretical model, we successfully predict the geometry of the bubbles and reveal the strain-coupled physics of the two-dimensional crystal.

Mechanics of tension-induced film wrinkling and restabilization: a review

Ting Wang et al.

Summary: This review focuses on recent advancements in the mechanics of tension-induced film wrinkling and restabilization, highlighting three major stages of progress and the impacts of curved configurations and material properties on pattern formation. The growing demand for understanding and tracking secondary bifurcation transitions in thin film morphology evolution is driving the development of finite-strain plate/shell theories and sophisticated modelling methods. Overall, this progress not only enhances our understanding of complex instability behavior, but also uncovers novel phenomena and contributes to the development of wrinkle-tunable membrane structures and functional surfaces.

Poking and bulging of suspended thin sheets: Slippage, instabilities, and metrology

Zhaohe Dai et al.

Summary: Recent indentation and bulge tests on 2D materials have shown that traditional linear elastic assumptions may not apply due to slippage between the 2D materials and their supporting substrates. This slippage can lead to instabilities in the sheet, such as radial wrinkles in the suspended region. The study introduces a dimensionless parameter, the sliding number, to quantify the mechanical responses of thin sheets during indentation and bulging, highlighting the significance of interfacial slippage in these tests.

Wrinkling analysis of circular membranes by a Fourier based reduced model

Wei Huang et al.

Summary: This study improved a reduced model for the simulation of circular membrane wrinkling by introducing several Fourier harmonics, finding that the appearance of wrinkles in circular membranes does not rely on the Poisson?s effect. The study also investigated the instability mechanism of an annular membrane under in-plane stretching, and the effects of Poisson?s ratio and geometric dimensions on wrinkling patterns. Finally, the instability problem of a circular thin plate under in-plane compression was studied, with a focus on the boundary condition and wrinkling pattern effects on crest position and critical load.
