NK cell-derived extracellular granzyme B drives epithelial ulceration HSV-2 infection

Ying Shiang Lim et al.

Summary: Using a mouse model of vaginal HSV-2 infection, researchers discovered that interleukin-18 (IL-18) promotes accumulation of granzyme B in the vagina, leading to vaginal epithelial ulceration. Inhibiting granzyme B reduced disease and restored epithelial integrity without affecting viral control. Elevated levels of IL-18 and granzyme B were also found in human herpetic ulcers, suggesting their involvement in HSV-infected patients.

Leishmania-Induced Dendritic Cell Migration and Its Potential Contribution to Parasite Dissemination

Amanda Reboucas et al.

Summary: This study compared the infection of human dendritic cells (hDCs) with different clinical forms of Leishmania and found that hDC migration increased following infection with L. infantum (VL), L. braziliensis-induced disseminated (DL) and L. amazonensis-induced diffuse (DCL) cutaneous leishmaniasis. The study suggests that hDCs play an important role in the dissemination of Leishmania parasites in vertebrate hosts by upregulating proteins involved in adhesion complex formation, actin polymerization, and CCR7 expression.
