State of the Art for Diagnosis of Bacterial Vaginosis

Christina A. Muzny et al.

Summary: Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is a common cause of vaginal discharge in women of reproductive age and is associated with various negative health outcomes, including increased risk of HIV and other STIs, as well as adverse birth outcomes. The exact cause of BV, a dysbiosis of the vaginal microbiota, is still unknown. This mini-review provides an updated overview of the diagnostic tests used for BV in clinical and research settings, focusing on traditional and molecular diagnostics. It highlights the use of molecular diagnostic assays such as 16S rRNA gene sequencing, shotgun metagenomic sequencing, and FISH, as well as multiplex NAATs, in studying the vaginal microbiota and BV pathogenesis.

Prevalence of Mycoplasma genitalium and Chlamydia trachomatis in Chinese female with lower reproductive tract infection: a multicenter epidemiological survey

Zhan Zhang et al.

Summary: This study aims to understand the prevalence and risk factors of M. genitalium and C. trachomatis in women with lower reproductive tract infections in China. The results showed that women with lower genital dysbiosis are more likely to be infected with C. trachomatis and M. genitalium. Attention should be paid to M. genitalium infection in young women with abnormal vaginal microecology or having childbearing needs.

Sexual behavior shapes male genitourinary microbiome composition

Evelyn Toh et al.

Summary: The origin, composition, and significance of the distal male urethral microbiome are still unknown. However, vaginal microbiome dysbiosis is associated with new sex partners and urogynecological syndromes. This study found that sexual behavior strongly affects the composition of the urethral microbiome, suggesting that urogenital microbiology and sexual behavior are closely interconnected.

Bacterial Vaginosis: What Do We Currently Know?

Linda Abou Chacra et al.

Summary: The vaginal microbiome is an important part of the human microbiome, characterized by unique conditions. Increased diversity in the microbiota can lead to dysbiosis such as bacterial vaginosis, with significant health consequences. Diagnosis and treatment methods are evolving, and research on this topic is becoming increasingly important.

Treatment of Male Sexual Partners of Women With Bacterial Vaginosis: A Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Trial

Jane R. Schwebke et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine if treating male sexual partners of women with recurrent BV with multidose metronidazole could decrease BV recurrence rates in females. The results showed no significant difference in BV recurrence rates between treatment arms, but women with partners adhering to the medication were less likely to fail treatment.

Exploring the global vaginal microbiome and its impact on human health

Linda Abou Chacra et al.

Summary: Understanding the composition and variations of the vaginal microbiome is crucial for improving therapeutic management of gynaecological diseases. Recent studies have highlighted the complexity of microbial communities within the vagina, showing that they play a key role in vaginal physiology, metabolism, immune functions, and defense against infections. Further research is needed to fully understand the interactions among different microorganisms in order to identify predispositions to illnesses and develop new therapeutic strategies.

A Prospective, Open-Label Pilot Study of Concurrent Male Partner Treatment for Bacterial Vaginosis

Erica L. Plummer et al.

Summary: Initial treatment with antibiotics for bacterial vaginosis (BV) has a high rate of recurrence in women. A pilot study on heterosexual couples showed that concurrent partner treatment significantly reduced BV-associated bacteria in women and altered the genital microbiota composition in both partners. This approach may be a promising strategy to improve long-term BV cure rates.
