Novel Plant-Associated Brevibacillus and Lysinibacillus Genomospecies Harbor a Rich Biosynthetic Potential of Antimicrobial Compounds

Jennifer Jaehne et al.

Summary: This study presents the draft genome sequences of 59 endospore-forming Gram-positive bacterial strains isolated from Vietnamese crop plants. Several of these strains represent novel genomospecies and showed the potential for promoting plant growth and biocontrol against phytopathogens. Genome mining also identified 36 novel natural product biosynthesis gene clusters.

Kurstakin Triggers Multicellular Behaviors in Bacillus cereus AR156 and Enhances Disease Control Efficacy Against Rice Sheath Blight

Yi-Yang Yu et al.

Summary: In this study, the effects of kurstakin on the antagonism, multicellularity, and disease control ability of Bacillus cereus AR156 were investigated. A mutation in the nonribosomal peptide synthase responsible for kurstakin synthesis led to reduction in antagonistic ability and impaired swarming motility, biofilm formation, and amyloid protein accumulation of AR156. Kurstakin participates in plant disease control by directly inhibiting the growth of pathogenic fungi and enhancing the long-term environmental adaptability and colonization of AR156 on the host surface through triggering multicellularity.

Two plant-associated Bacillus velezensis strains selected after genome analysis, metabolite profiling, and with proved biocontrol potential, were enhancing harvest yield of coffee and black pepper in large field trials

Le Thi Thanh Tam et al.

Summary: Eliminating chemically synthesized pesticides in agricultural products is crucial for successful Vietnamese agriculture. This study focuses on developing biostimulants based on Bacillus subtilis species complex, which showed antagonistic action against plant pathogens. Genome sequencing revealed that many of the isolates belong to Bacillus velezensis species complex and possess natural product biosynthesis gene clusters. In vitro and in vivo experiments demonstrated the potential of these strains to enhance plant growth and suppress phytopathogens. Field trials confirmed the efficacy of selected strains TL7 and S1 in stimulating plant growth and protecting crops from nematodes, fungi, and oomycetes.

Cereulide and Emetic Bacillus cereus: Characterizations, Impacts and Public Precautions

Shuo Yang et al.

Summary: Cereulide, produced by Bacillus cereus, is a stable emetic toxin with high toxicity. There is a need for a better understanding of the impact of B. cereus and cereulide to prevent contamination and protect public health. Summarized information highlighting precautions at the public level is lacking, hence the aim of this review is to propose such precautions.

Keeping up with the Bacillus cereus group: taxonomy through the genomics era and beyond

Laura M. Carroll et al.

Summary: The Bacillus cereus group, also known as B. cereus sensu lato (s.l.), is a complex species containing multiple closely related lineages with varying pathogenic abilities. Taxonomic classification of these organisms is challenging due to conflicting changes proposed over the years. This review discusses the nomenclatural changes in the taxonomic space of B. cereus s.l., outlines contemporary taxonomic frameworks, and offers suggestions to avoid ambiguities in classification. Future directions and open problems in the taxonomic realm are also discussed.

Richard Dietrich et al.

Summary: Bacillus cereus is a soil bacterium responsible for two types of food-related gastrointestinal diseases: food intoxication and food infections. The diseases are caused by various toxins produced by the bacterium, including cereulide and proteinaceous enterotoxins. The review covers the distribution, genetic organization, regulation, and secretion mechanisms of these toxins, with a focus on Hbl and Nhe enterotoxin complexes.
