Wastewater Surveillance for Infectious Disease: A Systematic Review

Summary: Wastewater surveillance is a valuable tool for monitoring the transmission of SARS-CoV-2 and other infectious diseases. A comprehensive review of 100 studies across 38 countries identified 25 pathogen families, with most studies focusing on Picornaviridae. While many studies did not link wastewater findings to disease transmission, incorporating other measures such as disease incidence and hospitalizations can enhance the effectiveness of wastewater surveillance.

Detection of Enterovirus D68 in Wastewater Samples from the UK between July and November 2021

Summary: In recent years, infections with enterovirus D68 (EV-D68) have been associated with severe neurological diseases such as acute flaccid myelitis (AFM). However, there is a lack of active surveillance for EV-D68, making it difficult to fully assess this association. The authors observed an increase in EV-D68 detections in wastewater samples from the United Kingdom between July and November 2021, reflecting a rise in EV-D68 detections in clinical samples from various European countries. This study provides the first publicly available 2021 EV-D68 sequences, showing the co-circulation of EV-D68 strains from genetic clade D and sub-clade B3 as in previous years. The results highlight the value of environmental surveillance for early detection of circulating and clinically relevant human viruses.

Comparison of virus concentration methods and RNA extraction methods for SARS-CoV-2 wastewater surveillance

Summary: Wastewater surveillance is a promising tool for monitoring the spread of COVID-19, and this study evaluated different virus concentration methods for the detection of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater. Ultracentrifugation was found to be the most effective method, and lysis-buffer-based extraction method resulted in higher viral recovery efficiencies.

Molecular Epidemiology and Evolutionary Trajectory of Emerging Echovirus 30, Europe

Summary: In 2018, there was an upsurge of echovirus 30 (E30) infections reported in Europe, with most cases affecting individuals aged 0-4 and 25-34. A large-scale study of 1,329 E30 strains collected in 22 European countries from 2016 to 2018 revealed that the majority belonged to genetic clades G1 and G6, each with unique recombinant forms. The rapid turnover of new clades and recombinant forms occurred over time, and by 2018, clades G1 and G6 dominated the E30 outbreak, indicating the emergence of two distinct circulating clades in Europe.
