Text-Mining to Identify Gene Sets Involved in Biocorrosion by Sulfate-Reducing Bacteria: A Semi-Automated Workflow

Payal Thakur et al.

Summary: There is a large amount of literature on biocorrosion, but manually extracting genes and proteins is time-consuming. This study presents a text mining workflow that automatically extracts biocorrosion-associated genes/proteins in sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) from literature databases. The identified genes were validated and categorized as core and accessory gene families in 63 SRB genomes. The study suggests that text mining can significantly reduce manual curation time.

Study on Growth Influencing Factors and Desulfurization Performance of Sulfate Reducing Bacteria Based on the Response Surface Methodology

Yanrong Dong et al.

Summary: This study used wet soil around the tailings reservoir as seed mud to enrich sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) and analyzed the effects of temperature, environmental pH value, S2- concentration, and COD/SO42- on the growth of SRB through single factor experiment and response surface methodology (RSM). The optimal growth conditions of SRB were found to be a culture temperature of 34.74°C, an initial pH of 8.00, and an initial COD/SO42- ratio of 1.98. Under these conditions, the SRB exhibited the highest activity and achieved a removal percentage of 88.74% for SO42-.

Transcriptomics and Functional Analysis of Copper Stress Response in the Sulfate-Reducing Bacterium Desulfovibrio alaskensis G20

Abhilash Kumar Tripathi et al.

Summary: This study reported the effects of Cu(II) stress on a model SRB, Desulfovibrio alaskensis G20. The results indicated that the expression of genes was massively modulated at different Cu(II) concentrations, and changes in inorganic ion transporters, translation machinery, DNA transcription, and signal transduction were observed.

Subsurface hydrocarbon degradation strategies in low- and high-sulfate coal seam communities identified with activity-based metagenomics

Hannah D. Schweitzer et al.

Summary: This study investigates the potential genes and functional groups involved in hydrocarbon degradation to methane in coal seams from the Powder River Basin using environmentally relevant metagenomes and BONCAT-FACS derived translationally active metagenomes. The results reveal the presence of biosurfactants, aerobic dioxygenases, and anaerobic phenol degradation pathways in the active populations across the sampled coal seams.

Novel Methanobacterium Strain Induces Severe Corrosion by Retrieving Electrons from Fe0 under a Freshwater Environment

Shin-ichi Hirano et al.

Summary: This study identified a methanogenic isolate, Methanobacterium sp. TO1, capable of inducing iron corrosion by accepting electrons from Fe-0. Electrochemical analysis revealed that TO1 can uptake electrons at a lower potential compared to previously reported methanogens with extracellular electron transfer ability. This study highlights the corrosion risk posed by methanogens in anoxic freshwater environments and the importance of understanding the corrosion mechanism.

Summary: It is expected that copper mining output will increase significantly in the next 20 years due to the increased use of copper in electricity-related technologies. This can have a significant impact on water resources if stricter regulations and cleaner mining and processing technologies are not implemented.

The Influence of the Degree of Forest Management on Methylmercury and the Composition of Microbial Communities in the Sediments of Boreal Drainage Ditches

Kriss Bitenieks et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of forest management activities and seasonal variations on sediment chemistry and microbiota. Undisturbed sites had the highest concentrations of MeHg and microbial diversity, while disturbed sites had lower concentrations and diversity. MeHg concentrations were higher in summer and autumn compared to winter and spring. The composition and diversity of the microbial community showed less temporal variation compared to spatial variation between sites. Several bacterial taxa were positively correlated with MeHg concentrations.

Study on corrosion behavior of X80 steel under stripping coating by sulfate reducing bacteria

Yan-Yu Cui et al.

Summary: The growth and reproduction of SRB can increase the pH of the soil solution, promoting the corrosion of X80 steel, while in the presence of SRB, the corrosion of steel is controlled by both H+ reduction and sulfide depolarization reactions.

Nitrite as a causal factor for nitrate-dependent anaerobic corrosion of metallic iron induced by Prolixibacter strains

Takao Iino et al.

Summary: The study isolated four Prolixibacter strains, belonging to the Bacteroidetes phylum, that were able to reduce nitrate under anaerobic conditions, leading to enhanced corrosion of Fe-0 and carbon steel. The corrosion was mainly attributed to biological reduction of nitrate to nitrite followed by chemical oxidation of Fe-0 to Fe2+ and Fe3+.
