An antimicrobial peptide specifically active against Listeria monocytogenes is secreted by Bacillus pumilus SF214

Anella Saggese et al.

Summary: The study found that the antimicrobial peptide produced by Bacillus pumilus shows high specificity and antimicrobial activity against Listeria monocytogenes, and remains stable under different conditions. The synthesis and secretion time of this peptide are different from other antimicrobials, suggesting its potential biotechnological applications.

Selection of Beneficial Bacterial Strains With Potential as Oral Probiotic Candidates

Hamin Kim et al.

Summary: This study aimed to select potential oral probiotic candidates by isolating and identifying beneficial strains from the oral cavity of healthy volunteers. The selected strains showed safety, antagonistic properties against certain bacteria, and high survival rates in different conditions. The identified strains, including Streptococcus salivarius and various Lactobacillus species, are considered promising oral cavity probiotic candidates.

Modulation of intestinal epithelial cell proliferation and apoptosis by Lactobacillus gasseri SF1183

Blanda Di Luccia et al.

Summary: The gut microbiota plays a positive role in maintaining intestinal homeostasis through various mechanisms. This study investigated the effects of molecules secreted by Lactobacillus gasseri SF1183 on HCT116 cells and found that these molecules can reversibly reduce cell proliferation and protect cells from apoptosis. Additionally, they enhance the barrier function between cells.

Bacillus subtilis programs the differentiation of intestinal secretory lineages to inhibit Salmonella infection

Qihang Hou et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that Bacillus subtilis can stimulate the differentiation of intestinal secretory cells and shift the differentiation of intestinal stem cells towards a secretory cell fate by inhibiting the Notch pathway. Moreover, the programming effect of B. subtilis on intestinal differentiation is dependent on the Toll-like receptor 2 pathway. B. subtilis is also associated with an increased number of Paneth and goblet cells, leading to the production of antimicrobial peptides to protect the intestinal mucosal barrier against Salmonella typhimurium.

Treatment with a spore-based probiotic containing five strains of Bacillus induced changes in the metabolic activity and community composition of the gut microbiota in a SHIME® model of the human gastrointestinal system

Massimo Marzorati et al.

Summary: MegaSporeBioticTM, an oral, spore-based probiotic, was found to increase propionate levels, decrease lactate levels, and promote beneficial bacteria while reducing harmful bacteria in the colon through an in vitro model study using SHIME(R). The treatment also resulted in changes in metabolism and increased bacterial diversity.

The Sporobiota of the Human Gut

Muireann Egan et al.

Summary: The human gut microbiome is a diverse ecosystem that is integral to human health. Studies have shown that the formation of endospores by specific members of the gut microbiome is linked to antibiotic resistance and the spread of resistance genes, known as the resistome. This has important implications for human health, disease, and biotechnology.

Role of Fibrinolytic Enzymes in Anti-Thrombosis Therapy

Farwa Altaf et al.

Summary: Thrombosis, a major cause of deaths in the modern era, often requires treatment with classical drugs that may have unwanted side effects and high costs. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop novel and low-cost drugs for thrombosis treatment. Fibrinolytic enzymes, as potential compounds for thrombosis therapy, have the advantage of high efficacy in eliminating thrombi.
