Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi mediate how plant herbivory history influences herbivore performance

Hannah Locke et al.

Summary: Herbivore performance is influenced by plant host quality, chemical defences, and herbivory history. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AM fungi) can alter both plant quality and plant responses to herbivory. This study found that the effects of herbivory history on herbivore performance depend on the AM fungal environment of the plant.

Conservation and Loss of a Putative Iron Utilization Gene Cluster among Genotypes of Aspergillus flavus

Bishwo N. Adhikari et al.

Summary: Iron is an essential component for growth and development, but its bioavailability in filamentous fungi like Aspergillus flavus is limited due to oxidation by atmospheric oxygen. This study identified a putative iron utilization gene cluster in A. flavus and found that different genotypes exhibit diversity in the structure of the cluster, with lineage-specific loss of the iron utilization genes. Such divergence in iron acquisition capacity should be considered when selecting A. flavus active ingredients for biocontrol under changing climate conditions.

Efficacy of Entomopathogenic fungus Aspergillus nomius against Dolichoderus thoracicus

Wei-Jiun Lin et al.

Summary: The ant pest Dolichoderus thoracicus in Taiwan has been recently found to be infected by the fungus Aspergillus nomius, which is able to penetrate the ant cuticle and spread within the colony, causing increased mortality. A. nomius was shown to be more virulent to worker ants and could potentially exploit the ant host for nutrients efficiently. Further research is needed to assess the potential impacts of utilizing A. nomius to control outbreaks of D. thoracicus, considering its potential for causing human infections and environmental consequences.

Biocontrol of Aflatoxins Using Non-Aflatoxigenic Aspergillus flavus: A Literature Review

Rahim Khan et al.

Summary: Aflatoxins are carcinogenic compounds produced by fungi such as Aspergillus flavus, which can cause liver cancer in humans. Control methodologies for aflatoxin contamination are often expensive and environmentally unfriendly, leading to increased interest in using biocontrol agents as a more convenient and eco-friendly solution. Utilizing non-aflatoxigenic strains of A. flavus as biocontrol agents shows promise in effectively controlling aflatoxin contamination in cereal crops, with methods such as microbiological, molecular, and field-based approaches being used to select appropriate agents.

Diversity, Host Plants and Potential Distribution of Edible Saturniid Caterpillars in Kenya

Elizabeth Siago Kusia et al.

Summary: Edible insects, particularly caterpillars in the family Saturniidae, are a traditional food source with economic benefits in sub-Saharan Africa. This study aims to identify and predict the distribution of edible saturniids, their host plants, and the potential impact of climate change on their population. The information generated from this research will guide conservation efforts and ensure the sustainable use of edible saturniid caterpillars as food sources.
