In vitro anti-biofilm effects of Loxostylis alata extracts and isolated 5-demethyl sinensetin on selected foodborne bacteria

Summary: Bacterial biofilms pose health challenges in clinical environments and the food industry. The resistance of pathogens to antibiotics is making conventional antibiotic use ineffective. Previous studies found that extracts from Loxostylis alata have antimicrobial potential against bacterial pathogens. In this study, the inhibitory effects of the extracts and a compound from L. alata on biofilm growth and development were investigated. The extracts and compound demonstrated the ability to reduce initial cell attachment and biofilm biomass, but were not able to inhibit the growth of preformed biofilms.

Global burden of bacterial antimicrobial resistance in 2019: a systematic analysis

The European Union Summary Report on Antimicrobial Resistance in zoonotic and indicator bacteria from humans, animals and food in 2019-2020

Summary: Data on antimicrobial resistance in humans, animals, and food are collected annually by EU Member States and jointly analysed by EFSA and ECDC. The 2020 monitoring focused on poultry and their meat, while the 2019 monitoring focused on fattening pigs, calves, and their meat. Monitoring included data on Salmonella, Campylobacter, E. coli isolates, and specific monitoring of ESBL-/AmpC-/carbapenemase-producing E. coli isolates. Some countries also reported data on methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.
