Convergence of virulence and antimicrobial resistance in increasingly prevalent Escherichia coli ST131 papGII plus sublineages

Michael Biggel et al.

Summary: The Escherichia coli ST131 lineage is a major cause of urinary tract and bloodstream infections worldwide, and it is highly resistant to antimicrobials. This study found a correlation between the presence of invasiveness-associated papGII pathogenicity islands (PAIs) and the acquisition of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) genes in ST131 isolates. The prevalence of papGII+ isolates has dramatically increased since 2005, and the emergence of these isolates may lead to more severe and difficult-to-treat extraintestinal infections.

The role of potentiating mutations in the evolution of pandemic Escherichia coli clones

Elizabeth A. Cummins et al.

Summary: The emergence and success of E. coli ST131 pandemic clones highlights the urgent need to study the evolutionary processes underlying their existence. The colonization, expansion, and acquisition of multidrug resistance plasmids are key stages in the formation of antimicrobial-resistant pandemic clones.

Gram-negative neonatal sepsis in low- and lower-middle-income countries and WHO empirical antibiotic recommendations: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Sophie C. H. Wen et al.

Summary: This systematic review and meta-analysis focused on neonatal sepsis in low- and lower-middle-income countries since 2010, revealing Gram-negative organisms as a major cause, with significant rates of antimicrobial resistance. Regional differences in bacterial prevalence and resistance highlight the need for region-specific empirical treatment recommendations.
