Cyclospora cayetanensis comprises at least 3 species that cause human cyclosporiasis

Joel Leonard Nicholas Barratt et al.

Summary: A study on the genotypes of Cyclospora cayetanensis in the United States and China revealed two lineages, A and B, and discovered a new lineage in China, named lineage C. Retrospective analysis of epidemiological data also showed associations between different lineages and the geographic distribution and timing of infections.

The limit of detection of the BioFire (R) FilmArray (R) gastrointestinal panel for the foodborne parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis

Anna Peterson et al.

Summary: This study developed a new technique to determine the limit of detection (LOD) of C. cayetanensis oocysts using a cell sorter. The FilmArray GI panel detected samples with ≥20 oocysts in 100% of replicates, but showed varying detection for samples with 1, 5, or 10 oocysts. This method provides a parasitologically relevant LOD for comparing C. cayetanensis detection techniques.

Investigation of US Cyclospora cayetanensis outbreaks in 2019 and evaluation of an improved Cyclospora genotyping system against 2019 cyclosporiasis outbreak clusters

Joel Barratt et al.

Summary: Cyclosporiasis is an illness caused by the food-borne parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis, with an increase in cases leading to the development of genotyping tools for outbreak investigations. The CDC's system, based on deep amplicon sequencing and machine learning, has been improved and shows excellent sensitivity and specificity, with the potential to become the basis of a nationwide genotyping network.
