Targeted Genome Mining Reveals the Psychrophilic Clostridium estertheticum Complex as a Potential Source for Novel Bacteriocins, Including Cesin A and Estercticin A

Joseph Wambui et al.

Summary: In this study, the bacteriocin biosynthetic potential of the psychrophilic Clostridium estertheticum complex (CEC) was explored through genome mining and phenotypic screening. Twenty novel bacteriocin biosynthetic gene clusters (BBGC) were discovered, some of which showed antimicrobial activity against closely related clostridia species and clinically relevant pathogens.

Unraveling the Genotypic and Phenotypic Diversity of the Psychrophilic Clostridium estertheticum Complex, a Meat Spoilage Agent

Joseph Wambui et al.

Summary: The spoilage of vacuum-packed meat by Clostridium estertheticum complex (CEC) has been linked to the acetone-butyrate-ethanol fermentation, but the mechanism behind the variable gas production has not been fully elucidated. This study compares 50 CEC genomes from 11 CEC species to determine the genetic diversity and factors driving it. The analysis reveals that recombination and gene gain/loss events are important sources of natural variation within CEC, and the presence/absence of the hyp gene cluster is associated with variable gas production in meat.

Cold Shock Proteins Promote Nisin Tolerance in Listeria monocytogenes Through Modulation of Cell Envelope Modification Responses

Francis Muchaamba et al.

Summary: Csps play an important role in L. monocytogenes resistance to nisin stress, with a hierarchy of importance in csp gene contributions: cspD > cspB > cspA. Elimination of either cspA or cspB can improve L. monocytogenes' tolerance to nisin stress. Furthermore, Csp deficiency alters the expression of multiple genes, increasing sensitivity to cell-envelope-targeting stressors.
