Epidemiology of traumatic spinal cord injury: a large population-based study

Claudio Barbiellini Amidei et al.

Summary: This retrospective population-based study examined the incidence and mortality risks of traumatic spinal cord injury (TSCI) between 2011 and 2020. The results showed that the incidence rate of TSCI remained stable over the past decade, with a higher incidence in males and an association with increasing age. Most TSCIs were cervical lesions, with traffic crashes and occupational accidents being the main causes. The study also found a significantly higher mortality risk for patients aged 75 years and older compared to those under 55 years.

Exercise Ameliorates Spinal Cord Injury by Changing DNA Methylation

Ganchimeg Davaa et al.

Summary: The study showed that treadmill exercise can reduce the size of the lesion cavity and the number of macrophages in rats with SCI. It also found increased levels of 5mC and 5hmC in the brain motor cortex, as well as elevated expression of Tet family members (Tet1, Tet2, and Tet3). Moreover, exercise can promote locomotor function recovery in rats with SCI through epigenetic changes in the brain motor cortex.

Locomotion dependent neuron-glia interactions control neurogenesis and regeneration in the adult zebrafish spinal cord

Weipang Chang et al.

Summary: The study shows that physical exercise can activate neurogenesis in the spinal cord of adult zebrafish through cholinergic neurotransmission and a reduction of GABA(A) receptors. The researchers also found that functional recovery after spinal cord injury can be promoted by stimulating cholinergic receptors and interfering with GABAergic signaling. The findings suggest a model for activity-dependent neurogenesis in the adult zebrafish spinal cord during homeostasis and regeneration.

Neuroprotective Effects of Physical Activity via the Adaptation of Astrocytes

Grazia Maugeri et al.

Summary: Regular physical exercise has been shown to have multiple benefits on brain function, including improving cognition, promoting neurogenesis, and reducing symptoms of neurodegenerative diseases. These effects are not only mediated by neurons, but also by astrocytes, the most abundant glial cells in the brain.
