Utilization of functional feed additives to produce cost-effective, ecofriendly aquafeeds high in plant-based ingredients

Md. Sakhawat Hossain et al.

Summary: Fishmeals are highly valued protein sources in aquafeed, but their limited supply and increasing demand have led to the development of alternative protein-based aquafeeds. However, excessive use of alternative proteins can negatively impact fish performance. Supplementation of functional feed additives (FuFAs) has shown promise in improving the utilization of alternative proteins and enhancing fish growth and health. However, more research is needed to understand the effects and mechanisms of FuFAs in different aspects, such as digestion, age/size-related responses, species variations, absorption, metabolism, and physiological responses. Biochemical and molecular technologies are important in advancing the understanding of FuFA functions in aquafeed and improving fish performance. Efforts are also required to reduce the cost of functional feed supplements and investigate the use of functional feeds in combating fish diseases and reducing the reliance on antibiotics and chemical therapeutants to promote eco-friendly aquaculture practices.

Effects of partially replacing fishmeal with corn gluten meal on growth, feed utilization, digestive enzyme activity, and apparent nutrient digestibility for juvenile white shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei

Huaxing Lin et al.

Summary: This experiment assessed the possibility of replacing fishmeal with corn gluten meal in the diet of white shrimps. Results showed that when the replacement rate reached 30%, it had significant effects on the growth, feed utilization, digestive enzyme activity, and nutrient digestibility of the shrimp. In conclusion, the optimal dietary replacement rate was found to be 27.47%.

Evaluation of Dietary Soluble Extract Hydrolysates with or without Supplementation of Inosine Monophosphate Based on Growth, Hematology, Non-Specific Immune Responses and Disease Resistance in Juvenile Nile Tilapia Oreochromis niloticus

Jinho Bae et al.

Summary: This study found that dietary shrimp soluble extract can improve the growth performance, non-specific immune responses, and disease resistance in juvenile Nile tilapia. However, the addition of inosine monophosphate did not provide additional benefits to this ingredient. Further research is needed to better understand the effects of fishery by-products and inosine monophosphate on fish diets.
