Yellow mealworm (Tenebrio Molitor) enhances intestinal immunity in largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) via the NF?B/survivin signaling pathway

Chunyu Ge et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the mechanisms of yellow mealworm in intestinal immunity and health. It was found that low concentration of yellow mealworm feed reduced proinflammatory cytokines, while high concentration had negative impact on intestinal health. Further experiments revealed that yellow mealworm feed enhanced intestinal immunity and improved health by activating NF-κBp65 and upregulating survivin expression.

Microbiomic and metabonomic analysis provide new insights into the enhanced intestinal health in large-size largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) when fed novel proteins: Novel proteins are promising foods for future aquaculture

Lukuan Li et al.

Summary: This study explores the potential of novel proteins, such as Clostridium autoethanogenum (CAP), Tenebrio molitor (TM), Chlorella vulgaris (ChM), and cottonseed protein concentrate (CSM), as alternative food sources for aquaculture. The intestinal barriers of fish when fed these novel proteins have been investigated, showing superior performance in terms of histological structure and barrier function for ChM, CAP, and TM compared to CSM and fishmeal (FM). The study also reveals changes in gut microbiota and their correlation with inflammatory response, antioxidant status, and other physiological biomarkers.

The contribution of fisheries and aquaculture to the global protein supply

Claude E. Boyd et al.

Summary: The contribution of aquatic animal protein to the global protein supply and the importance of aquaculture and capture fisheries in supplying this protein is relevant to the assessment and decision-making regarding future aquatic food production and its security. While aquaculture produces more aquatic animals, capture fisheries still provide a significant amount of crude protein. The production of capture fisheries has not increased in the past two decades, highlighting the need for aquaculture to meet the growing demand. The use of fishmeal and fish oil in aquaculture feeds needs to be reduced to reduce dependence on small wild fish and ensure food security.

Dietary supplementation of Chlorella vulgaris improved growth performance, immunity, intestinal microbiota and stress resistance of juvenile narrow clawed crayfish, Pontastacus leptodactylus Eschscholtz, 1823

Omid Safari et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of fishmeal substitution with Chlorella vulgaris meal on the growth performance, immune response, and stress resistance of juvenile narrow clawed crayfish. The results showed that a diet containing 75% fishmeal substitution with chlorella meal resulted in the highest growth performance and improved immune response. There was also a positive correlation between the dietary inclusion of chlorella and the activities of digestive enzymes and immune-related enzymes.

Cottonseed protein concentrate as fishmeal alternative for largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) supplemented a yeast-based paraprobiotic: Effects on growth performance, gut health and microbiome

Xiaoze Xie et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of MsYF on the growth performance, gut health, and microbiome of largemouth bass fed a diet using CPC as a fishmeal alternative. The results showed that substituting fishmeal with CPC enhanced the growth performance and regulated intestinal barrier and peptide transport functions. Furthermore, MsYF supplementation in a low fishmeal diet improved growth performance and supported intestinal health.

Effects of replacing fishmeal with methanotroph (Methylococcus capsulatus, Bath) bacteria meal (FeedKind®) on growth and intestinal health status of juvenile largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides)

Qile Zhang et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the feasibility of using methanotroph bacteria meal as a fishmeal substitute in largemouth bass diets. The results showed that an inclusion level of 129 g/kg of the bacteria meal did not significantly affect the growth performance of the fish. However, higher inclusion levels negatively affected intestinal morphology and inflammatory cytokine gene expression.

Effects of alternate feeding between fish meal and novel protein diets on the intestinal health of juvenile largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides)

Lukuan Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of completely replacing fish meal with novel proteins on the intestinal health of largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides). The results showed that Chlorella vulgaris and Clostridium autoethanogenum improved intestinal health by enhancing antioxidant enzymes activity, suppressing inflammatory response, strengthening intestinal barrier, and increasing beneficial bacteria. On the other hand, cottonseed protein concentrate impaired intestinal health by decreasing antioxidant enzymes activity, increasing inflammatory response, and the abundance of pathogenic bacteria taxa.

The effects of replacing fishmeal by Chlorella vulgaris and fish oil by Schizochytrium sp. and Microchloropsis gaditana blend on growth performance, feed efficiency, muscle fatty acid composition and liver histology of gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata)

I. T. Karapanagiotidis et al.

Summary: The study found that replacing fishmeal protein with Chlorella vulgaris and fish oil with a blend of Schizochytrium sp. and Microchloropsis gaditana did not have adverse effects on the growth, feed utilization, muscle fatty acid composition, and liver histology of Sparus aurata. The replacements did lead to an increase in lipid retention and deposition mainly in the liver, but no other significant changes were observed. The study suggests that these replacements can be made without negatively impacting the growth performance, feed efficiency, proximate composition, and muscle EPA and DHA levels of the fish.
