The Intestinal Microbiota Links Tea Polyphenols with the Regulation of Mood and Sleep to Improve Immunity

Yuting Zhang et al.

Summary: Negative emotions and sleep disorders are common health concerns in modern society. The relationship between gut microbiota and tea polyphenols (TP) in regulating mood and sleep is explored in this review. The gut microbiota can promote the metabolism and absorption of TP, while TP can modify the gut microbiota composition and inhibit harmful bacteria. Combining gut microbiota and TP in treatment options may be more effective than traditional pharmacological treatments, as gut microbiota can produce bioactive metabolites from dietary polyphenols that can regulate mood and sleep simultaneously to improve immunity.

Chemical compositions and sleep-promoting activities of hop (Humulus lupulus L.) varieties

Byungjick Min et al.

Summary: This study investigated the sleep-promoting effects of different hop extracts in invertebrate and vertebrate models. Citra had a high alpha-acid content, while Saphir had high beta-acid and xanthohumol content. Simcoe and Mosaic water extracts and Saphir and Simcoe ethanol extracts increased total nighttime sleep in Drosophila melanogaster. They also improved total sleep time in mice with pentobarbital-induced sleep and upregulated the mRNA expression of GABA receptors in mouse brains.

Potential of Polyphenols for Improving Sleep: A Preliminary Results from Review of Human Clinical Trials and Mechanistic Insights

Masanobu Hibi

Summary: Global epidemiologic evidence supports a connection between sleep disorders and fruits and vegetable ingestion, specifically the intake of polyphenols. Polyphenols are plant substances that are involved in oxidative stress, signaling pathways, and gene expression related to an anti-inflammatory environment. Understanding the relationship between polyphenol intake and sleep may lead to improved sleep and prevention of chronic disease. This review discusses the public health implications of polyphenol intake on sleep and the potential polyphenol molecules that can enhance sleep quality and quantity.

Chlorogenic acid exerts neuroprotective effect against hypoxia-ischemia brain injury in neonatal rats by activating Sirt1 to regulate the Nrf2-NF-κB signaling pathway

Yihui Zheng et al.

Summary: Chlorogenic acid (CGA) has potential neuroprotective effects on neonatal hypoxic-ischemic brain injury (HIE), reducing infarct volume, improving tissue structure, and enhancing learning and cognitive abilities. CGA activates Sirt1 to regulate the Nrf2-NF-kappa B signaling pathway, reducing inflammation and oxidative stress and inhibiting neuronal apoptosis. Additionally, CGA suppresses glial proliferation.

Sleep-promoting activity of lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) rhizome water extract via GABAA receptors

Yejin Ahn et al.

Summary: This study investigated the sleep-promoting activity of water extract from lotus rhizome (LE). The results showed that LE increased sleep duration by increasing nonrapid eye movement (NREM) sleep, which was associated with the upregulation of GABA(A) receptors and GABA concentration in the brain. This suggests that LE may promote sleep by activating GABA(A) receptors.

Rutin Improves Anxiety and Reserpine-Induced Depression in Rats

Ahmed Foudah et al.

Summary: Mental disorders have a significant impact on global health, accounting for about 8% of the global burden of disease. Conventional antidepressants have limited efficacy and increased side effects with prolonged use. Herbal medicine, with its antioxidant properties, may have a more substantial pharmacological effect in regulating mood. This study investigates the impact of rutin on reserpine-induced anxiety and depression in rats, showing that rutin has a modest antidepressant effect mediated by increased levels of serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine in specific brain regions.
