GR24 alleviates the adverse effects of drought stress on physiology and photosystem II function in alfalfa (Medicago Sativa L.)

Yuwei Yang et al.

Summary: Drought stress is a major environmental challenge for plants, but this study found that a synthetic strigolactone analog, GR24, can alleviate the adverse effects of drought stress on alfalfa. The treatment with GR24 increased the levels of soluble protein and sugar, and decreased the content of malondialdehyde in the plants. Additionally, GR24 enhanced the activities of antioxidant enzymes and improved the photosynthesis in alfalfa leaves. The expression of genes related to photosynthesis also showed consistent changes with the physiological indexes.

Photosynthetic, antioxidant activities, and osmoregulatory responses in winter wheat differ during the stress and recovery periods under heat, drought, and combined stress

Chen Ru et al.

Summary: There will be longer and more intense periods of heat and drought stress in the future for terrestrial ecosystems. This study investigated the responses of wheat plants to heat and drought stress and their recovery after stress relief. The results showed that while most physiological processes were reversible after stress relief, some irreversible damage was caused by combined heat and drought stress.

Strigolactone-Mediated Oxidative Stress Alleviation in Brassica rapa Through Upregulating Antioxidant System Under Water Deficit Conditions

Ahmad Ali et al.

Summary: Plant's sensitivity to abiotic stresses threatens crop productivity worldwide. In this study, the application of strigolactone (SL) was found to modulate the water deficit-induced response of Brassica rapa. Results showed that SL application under water deficit condition enhanced the root growth and photosynthesis-related traits of Brassica rapa. Furthermore, it reduced oxidative stress and upregulated genes involved in the antioxidant defense system. Overall, foliar application of SL positively affected the responses of Brassica rapa plants under water deficit condition.

TaSINA2B, interacting with TaSINA1D, positively regulates drought tolerance and root growth in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)

Jianhui Ma et al.

Summary: In this study, 15 SINA-type E3 ubiquitin ligases were identified and cloned from wheat. The transcription level of TaSINA2B was significantly induced by drought, osmotic, and abscisic acid treatments. Wheat with the TaSINA2B promoter showed higher drought tolerance and gene expression levels, mainly due to a 64 bp insertion in its promoter. TaSINA2B-overexpressing transgenic wheat lines exhibited enhanced drought tolerance through promoting root growth. An interaction between TaSINA2B and TaSINA1D was also detected. TaSINA1D-overexpressing transgenic wheat lines showed similar drought tolerance and root growth phenotype to those observed when TaSINA2B was overexpressed.

How Does the Environment Affect Wheat Yield and Protein Content Response to Drought? A Meta-Analysis

Chenxi Wan et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively explored how the environment affects wheat yield and protein content response to drought through meta-analysis. The results showed that drought significantly decreased wheat yield and protein yield, but increased protein content and nitrogen content. The responses of yield and nitrogen content to drought were mainly related to the drought type, while protein yield was mainly related to precipitation. Sandy soils and high nitrogen application level mitigated the negative effects of drought, and winter wheat showed better drought resistance than spring wheat.
