Associations of serum vitamin C concentrations with risk of all-cause and cause-specific mortality among individuals with and without type 2 diabetes

Yunjing Ou et al.

Summary: Compared with individuals without type 2 diabetes (T2D), those with T2D have lower levels of serum vitamin C and are at higher risk of mortality. The association between serum vitamin C and mortality differs in individuals with and without T2D, with a linear dose-response relationship observed in T2D patients and a nonlinear association with a threshold around 48.0 μmol/L in non-diabetic individuals.

The effects of vitamin C supplementation on glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Saeed Nosratabadi et al.

Summary: This systematic review and meta-analysis examined the effect of vitamin C supplementation on glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The findings suggest that long-term (≥ 12 weeks) and high-dose (≥ 1000 mg/day) vitamin C supplementation may improve glycemic profile in T2DM patients. However, further high-quality randomized controlled trials are needed to confirm these results.

Abnormal urinary loss of vitamin C in diabetes: prevalence and clinical characteristics of a vitamin C renal leak

Ifechukwude Ebenuwa et al.

Summary: This study investigated the contribution, prevalence, and clinical characteristics of dysregulated vitamin C renal physiology in diabetes. The results showed a higher prevalence of vitamin C renal leak in participants with diabetes, which was associated with reduced plasma vitamin C concentrations. Glycemic control, microvascular complications, obesity, and proteinuria were predictive factors for renal leak.

Decreasing Vitamin C Intake, Low Serum Vitamin C Level and Risk for US Adults with Diabetes

Hongbing Sun et al.

Summary: The study found that VC intake and serum VC levels were inversely associated with markers of pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes. Low VC intake and deficient serum VC levels may increase the risk of diabetes and lead to shorter survival years and higher mortality risks.

Vitamin C and the management of diabetic foot ulcers: a literature review

Khanh Phuong Tong et al.

Summary: This literature review evaluates the role of vitamin C in the nervous, cardiovascular, and immune systems in relation to wound healing and diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs). It also discusses the lesser known role of vitamin C in depression, a condition that affects many individuals with DFUs. However, there is a limited amount of literature on this subject, with mainly observational and animal studies, and few human clinical trials. Therefore, there is a need for additional human clinical trials on vitamin C supplementation in individuals with DFUs to fill the knowledge gap and guide clinical practice.

Discrepancies in global vitamin C recommendations: a review of RDA criteria and underlying health perspectives

Anitra C. Carr et al.

Summary: There are significant discrepancies in global recommendations for daily vitamin C intake, with factors such as gender, age, pregnancy, lactation, and smoking being debated among regulatory authorities. Despite the looming global obesity pandemic, body weight as a significant predictor of vitamin C status and requirement has not been considered in dietary recommendations.

Vitamin C improves healing of foot ulcers: a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial

Jenny E. Gunton et al.

Summary: The study conducted a trial of vitamin C therapy for chronic foot ulcers at the Foot Wound Clinic, showing significant improvement in ulcer healing with vitamin C treatment and no amputations needed in the vitamin C group. Further research is needed to determine the effectiveness threshold for serum vitamin C levels and the possibility of better or lesser responding subgroups.

Effects of Vitamin C Supplementation on Glycemic Control and Cardiovascular Risk Factors in People With Type 2 Diabetes: A GRADE-Assessed Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials

Shaun A. Mason et al.

Summary: The study aims to investigate the efficacy of oral vitamin C supplementation in improving glycemic control, cardiovascular risk factors, and oxidative stress in people with type 2 diabetes. The results from 28 studies show that vitamin C has a significant impact on systolic blood pressure, HbA(1c), and diastolic blood pressure, but there are limitations due to predominantly short-term studies with a small number of participants.

Does vitamin C supplementation exert profitable effects on serum lipid profile in patients with type 2 diabetes? A systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis

Zahra Namkhah et al.

Summary: The meta-analysis found that vitamin C supplementation significantly decreased TG and TC levels in T2DM patients, but did not affect LDL and HDL. Duration of treatment and dose of vitamin C were found to influence the improvement of lipid profile in T2DM patients. Results suggest that long-term vitamin C supplementation may be more beneficial for improving lipid profile in diabetic populations.
