Protective Effect of Sargassum fusiforme Fucoidan against Ethanol-Induced Oxidative Damage in In Vitro and In Vivo Models

Lei Wang et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the protective effect of fucoidan from Sargassum fusiforme against ethanol-induced oxidative damage. Results showed that fucoidan effectively decreased the damage to liver cells and increased the survival rate of zebrafish. These findings suggest the potential of fucoidan as an ingredient in the functional food industry.

Hangover-Relieving Effect of Ginseng Berry Kombucha Fermented by Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Gluconobacter oxydans in Ethanol-Treated Cells and Mice Model

Eun Jung Choi et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the hangover relieving effect of ginseng berry kombucha (GBK) fermented with Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Gluconobacter oxydans in in vitro and in vivo models. The antioxidant activity and oxidative stress inhibitory effect of GBK were evaluated in ethanol-treated human liver HepG2 cells. GBK exerted a protective effect against ethanol-induced liver damage by regulating the Nrf2/Keap1 pathway.

Screening antioxidant capacity of Mexican maize (Zea mays L.) landraces with colored grain using ABTS, DPPH and FRAP methods

Orlando Ramirez-Garcia et al.

Summary: The study investigated the antioxidant capacity of maize genotypes with blue purple and red grain, finding that the AC in blue purple and cherry red grain was correlated with total anthocyanin content, while in brick red grain it was associated with total soluble phenolics. The ABTS method was found to be the most sensitive in detecting variation in AC for each maize grain color, with FRAP method showing sensitivity to variation in TAC and TSP for different types of maize.

Crosstalk between Oxidative Stress and Inflammatory Liver Injury in the Pathogenesis of Alcoholic Liver Disease

Yoon Mee Yang et al.

Summary: Alcoholic liver disease (ALD), caused by excessive alcohol consumption, results in liver damage. Studies have shown that there is a relationship between hepatic oxidative stress and inflammatory responses, which may be useful for developing therapeutic approaches for ALD.

Role of Mitochondrial Cytochrome P450 2E1 in Healthy and Diseased Liver

Julie Massart et al.

Summary: CYP2E1 plays a pivotal role in hepatotoxicity induced by alcohol abuse and different xenobiotics, generating reactive metabolites that induce oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, and cell death. Increased CYP2E1 activity in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) leads to reactive oxygen species overproduction, triggering oxidative stress, necroinflammation, and fibrosis. Mitochondrial CYP2E1 (mtCYP2E1) has been found in different experimental models and may contribute to alcohol-associated liver disease, xenobiotic-induced hepatotoxicity, and NAFLD.

Alcohol Exposure Induces Depressive and Anxiety-like Behaviors via Activating Ferroptosis in Mice

Congyue Xu et al.

Summary: This study found that ferroptosis plays an important role in the mediation of alcohol-induced depressive and anxiety-like behaviors. Alcohol exposure led to neuron damage and reduced levels of synapse-related proteins in mice. It also increased the number of iron-positive staining cells. The ferroptosis inhibitor prevented alcohol-induced neuron damage and enhanced the expression of certain proteins.

Ethanol Metabolism in the Liver, the Induction of Oxidant Stress, and the Antioxidant Defense System

Martha Lucinda Contreras-Zentella et al.

Summary: The liver metabolizes ethanol through three enzymatic pathways, with alcohol dehydrogenase considered the most important enzyme. Contradicting experiments suggest that non-alcohol dehydrogenase pathways may be more relevant for ethanol metabolism than previously thought. Ethanol can be metabolized to acetaldehyde mainly through cytochrome P450, which generates reactive oxygen species. Catalase can also participate in ethanol metabolism by reacting with ethanol to produce acetaldehyde. Besides its role as an antioxidant, catalase may have a primary role in xenobiotic metabolism in the liver.

Pathophysiological Aspects of Alcohol Metabolism in the Liver

Jeongeun Hyun et al.

Summary: Alcoholic liver disease (ALD) is a chronic liver disease caused by chronic or binge alcohol consumption, leading to liver damage and inflammatory reactions. However, the lack of animal models that fully mimic human ALD has posed challenges for the development of novel treatments.

Acetaldehyde exposure underlies functional defects in monocytes induced by excessive alcohol consumption

Shunsuke Shiba et al.

Summary: The study revealed that peripheral CD14(+) monocytes of alcohol-dependent patients showed significantly suppressed production of inflammatory cytokines in response to LPS stimulation on admission, but partially recovered after alcohol cessation, which was associated with ALDH2/ADH1B gene polymorphisms.
