Effects of Florfenicol on Intestinal Histology, Apoptosis and Gut Microbiota of Chinese Mitten Crab (Eriocheir sinensis)

Xinping Guo et al.

Summary: Excessive use of antibiotics in aquaculture leads to antibiotic residues in aquatic animal products, which poses a threat to human health. This study investigated the effects of florfenicol (FF) on Chinese mitten crabs, focusing on gut health, microbiota, and their relationship. The results showed that FF exposure caused significant changes in gut morphology, immune responses, apoptosis characteristics, and antioxidant enzyme activities. The high concentration of FF also led to a decrease in microbial diversity and changes in composition. These findings provide new insights into the impact of antibiotics on gut health and microbiota in aquatic invertebrates.

Disruption of fish gut microbiota composition and holobiont's metabolome during a simulated Microcystis aeruginosa (Cyanobacteria) bloom

Alison Gallet et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that cyanobacterial blooms affect the composition and functions of fish microbiomes, as well as the metabolome of holobionts. The gut bacterial community of fish exhibits significant changes in response to blooms, while the holobiont's gut metabolome displays major changes. These findings highlight the importance of bloom events to fish health and fitness through microbiome-related effects.

Acute thiamethoxam exposure induces hepatotoxicity and neurotoxicity in juvenile Chinese mitten crab (Eriocheir sinensis)

Yiwen Yang et al.

Summary: The study found that thiamethoxam, a neonicotinoid insecticide, can be toxic to crustaceans, leading to hepatotoxicity and neurotoxic effects. The toxicity is related to the activation of antioxidant and detoxification systems, regulation of immune-related gene expression, and potential inflammatory response. High concentrations of thiamethoxam also cause decreased acetylcholinesterase activity and downregulation of synaptic transmission-related genes, affecting neurotoxicity in crustaceans.

The effect of extruded multigrain powder on metabolism and intestinal flora of high-fat-diet induced C57BL/6J mice

Chunxiao Wang et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of extruded multigrain (Tartary buckwheat, oat and black bean) powder product (MG) fed with a high-fat-diet (HFD) on metabolism and gut microbiota modulation of mice. The results showed that MG reduced the weight gain of HFD-induced mice, improved glucose tolerance, and reduced cholesterol and triglyceride levels. In addition, the intervention of HFMG could promote the release of butyric acid in short chain fatty acids, improve the disorder of intestinal flora, and increase the relative abundance of Bacteroidetes while reducing the relative abundance of Firmicutes.

Effects of acute salinity stress on osmoregulation, antioxidant capacity and physiological metabolism of female Chinese mitten crabs (Eriocheir sinensis)

Xin Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of salinity stress on osmoregulation, antioxidant capacity, physiological metabolism, inflammatory response, and apoptotic factors in Chinese mitten crabs. The results showed that increasing water salinity led to higher hemolymph osmolality, while decreasing the activity and mRNA expression of Na+/K+ATPase in the posterior gills. The 30%o group exhibited higher antioxidant enzyme activities. Chinese mitten crabs effectively regulated their antioxidant capacity to resist oxidative damage and enhance resistance to salinity stress.

Effects of Copper Exposure on Oxidative Stress, Apoptosis, Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress, Autophagy and Immune Response in Different Tissues of Chinese Mitten Crab (Eriocheir sinensis)

Wenrong Feng et al.

Summary: High concentrations of copper pose a threat to aquatic animals, but the response mechanisms of crustaceans to Cu2+ exposure are not well understood. This study investigated the physiological and molecular changes in Chinese mitten crabs after Cu2+ exposure. The results showed that Cu2+ exposure decreased antioxidative capacity and promoted lipid peroxidation in different tissues. It also induced apoptosis and autophagy, and triggered an immune response. The toxicity of Cu2+ may be associated with the activation of ERK, AMPK, and TLR2-MyD88-NF-kappa B pathways.
