A mechanism-based multisurface plasticity model for hexagonal close-packed materials with detailed validation and assessment

Padmeya P. Indurkar et al.

Summary: We propose a multi-surface model (MSM) to simulate the anisotropic and asymmetric yield responses in hexagonal close-packed (HCP) materials. The MSM incorporates separate anisotropic, symmetric yield surfaces for soft and hard glide, and an anisotropic, asymmetric yield surface for extension twinning. The model is calibrated and validated against experimental and simulation data, and its capability is assessed for complex boundary-value problems at the macroscale and microscale.

Magnesium alloy design: Examples from the Materials in Extreme Dynamic Environments Metals Collaborative Research Group

Todd C. Hufnagel et al.

Summary: Designing metallic materials for resistance to ballistic penetration is challenging due to the multiple possible mechanisms of deformation and failure under dynamic loading, which are sensitive to details of structure on scales ranging from atomic to macroscopic. Using magnesium alloys as an example, this overview illustrates some key scientific and technical challenges in this area.

Improved mechanical properties and strengthening mechanism with the altered precipitate orientation in magnesium alloys

Y. J. Wan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of aging prior to twinning deformation on the precipitate orientation in AZ31 Mg alloy. The results demonstrated that the presence of prismatic plates led to significant improvements in compressive yield strength and compression ratio. Analysis using a yield strengthen model revealed that the enhanced CYS was primarily attributed to the altered precipitate orientation and refined grain size, with prismatic plates exhibiting a stronger hardening effect on basal slip.

Alloying design and microstructural control strategies towards developing Mg alloys with enhanced ductility

Zhong-Zheng Jin et al.

Summary: Magnesium alloys show promising potential as lightweight structural materials in transportation and aerospace fields due to their low density and high specific strength. However, most high-strength magnesium alloys exhibit poor formability and ductility at room temperature, limiting their applications. Recent research has focused on enhancing the ductility of magnesium alloys through alloying design strategies and microstructural control using advanced processing technologies.

Grain size effect on tensile properties and slip systems of pure magnesium

Kang Wei et al.

Summary: The refinement of magnesium grains can enhance both its strength and ductility due to the activation of additional slip systems. Fine-grained magnesium exhibits improved work hardening and ductility compared to coarse-grained magnesium, with the activation of non-basal dislocations playing a key role in enhancing properties. The contributions of nano stacking faults on strengthening and ductilization, as well as their formation mechanism, are discussed in the study.

A crystal plasticity investigation of grain size-texture interaction in magnesium alloys

Babak Ravaji et al.

Summary: This study investigates the microstructure-property linkages in magnesium by focusing on the interaction effects between grain size, texture, and loading orientation. The findings suggest that grain size refinement reduces extension twinning, and both grain refinement and textural weakening can decrease plastic anisotropy and tension-compression asymmetry. The study offers insight into the roles of texture and grain size in the damage behavior of engineered magnesium microstructures.

Strategies for enhancing the room-temperature stretch formability of magnesium alloy sheets: a review

Qinghang Wang et al.

Summary: Recent advances in enhancing the stretch formability of Mg alloy sheets at room temperature have focused on designing new alloy systems and utilizing advanced processing techniques. These strategies hold great promise for developing high-performance and low-cost Mg alloy sheets with a superior combination of strength, ductility, and stretch formability. Suggestions for future research directions in the development of such high-performance Mg alloy sheets have also been provided.
