Ongoing research efforts are needed to improve survival rates and develop better therapeutic approaches for ATLL.

Summary: Adult T-cell leukemia-lymphoma (ATL) is a heterogeneous disease with different clinical subtypes. Aggressive ATL requires more intensive treatments and allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation can be a potential cure. Recent advances in reduced-intensity conditioning regimens and the availability of new drugs have significantly improved the therapeutic strategies for aggressive ATL. This article provides an overview of these recent advances.

Mother-to-child transmission of HTLV-1 primarily occurs through breastfeeding, but short-term breastfeeding does not increase transmission rate compared to artificial nutrition. Therefore, clinical applications of antiretroviral drugs and immunotherapy are urgently needed.

HTLV-1 Coinfection among Patients Attending a Large HIV Treatment Centre in Trinidad

Summary: Studies have shown that HIV-1/HTLV-1 coinfected patients tend to have higher CD4+ counts than HIV singly infected patients. This study conducted chart reviews at a large HIV Clinic in Trinidad to determine the prevalence of HIV-1/HTLV-1 coinfection and compare the CD4+ counts and opportunistic infections among coinfected patients and HIV-1 singly infected patients. The results showed that coinfected patients had higher HIV-1 viral loads and a higher rate of opportunistic infections compared to singly infected patients, indicating a worse prognosis.
