Postharvest Changes in the Nutritional Properties of Commercial and Traditional Lettuce Varieties in Relation with Overall Visual Quality

Eva Martinez-Ispizua et al.

Summary: The cultivation and consumption of traditional lettuce varieties are increasing due to their diversity and high nutraceutical quality. However, lettuce is perishable, resulting in significant nutritional loss during storage. This study compared the variation of bioactive compounds, antioxidant capacity, and mineral content in landraces and commercial lettuce varieties during the storage period. The results showed individualized behavior among lettuce varieties, with no clear advantage for commercial varieties. Landrace L10 stood out for its stable appearance and nutritional quality throughout its life cycle.

Altered Expression of OsAAP3 Influences Rice Lesion Mimic and Leaf Senescence by Regulating Arginine Transport and Nitric Oxide Pathway

Qilang Wei et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the amino acid transporter OsAAP3 is involved in the regulation of lesion mimic and leaf senescence in rice plants. Altering the expression of OsAAP3 can initiate the nitric oxide signaling pathway, impacting various physiological indicators in rice leaves and ultimately leading to cell death and leaf senescence.

Melatonin delays yellowing of broccoli during storage by regulating chlorophyll catabolism and maintaining chloroplast ultrastructure

Chenghao Wu et al.

Summary: Melatonin treatment significantly extended the shelf life of broccoli, delayed the decline of chlorophyll content, maintained more intact chloroplasts, suppressed the activities of chlorophyll catabolic enzymes, and down-regulated the expressions of genes involved in chlorophyll catabolism.

Enhanced NRT1.1/NPF6.3 expression in shoots improves growth under nitrogen deficiency stress in Arabidopsis

Yasuhito Sakuraba et al.

Summary: The study identified an association between polymorphisms in the promoter of the NRT1.1/NPF6.3 gene and varying degrees of nitrogen deficiency responses in Arabidopsis shoots. Enhanced expression of NRT1.1 in shoots, rather than roots, was found to be responsible for improved growth under nitrogen deficient conditions.

Regulation of the Photon Spectrum on Growth and Nutritional Attributes of Baby-Leaf Lettuce at Harvest and during Postharvest Storage

Viktorija Vastakaite-Kairiene et al.

Summary: The study found that additional green light significantly increased shoot fresh and dry weight, while blue light increased chlorophyll concentration, total phenolic content, and anthocyanin content. Green light also increased antiradical activity. Overall, green light had a distinct effect on lettuce growth attributes, while blue and red light treatments resulted in higher concentrations of metabolites before and during storage.

Exogenous melatonin maintains leaf quality of postharvest Chinese flowering cabbage by modulating respiratory metabolism and energy status

Xiao-li Tan et al.

Summary: The study found that melatonin delayed leaf yellowing and maintained nutrient content in postharvest Chinese flowering cabbage. Additionally, melatonin treatment reduced weight loss, respiration rate, and enzyme activities, while maintaining high energy status in the leaves.
