Sex-dependent changes of hippocampal synaptic plasticity and cognitive performance in C57BL/6J mice exposed to neonatal repeated maternal separation

Giuseppe Talani et al.

Summary: The repeated maternal separation (RMS) model was used to study the long-term effects of early-life stress on brain neurophysiology in mice. The study found significant changes in synaptic transmission and cognitive performance in male mice exposed to RMS. Female mice also showed some changes, but to a lesser extent. Furthermore, the study found that early injection of estrogen prevented the effects of RMS.

Maternal Separation Alters Ethanol Drinking and Reversal Learning Processes in Adolescent Rats: The Impact of Sex and Glycine Transporter Type 1 (GlyT1) Inhibitor

Joanna Filarowska-Jurko et al.

Summary: Adverse early life experiences, such as maternal separation, are associated with an increased risk for mental and physical health problems, including substance abuse. This study found that the NMDAR/glycine sites may be involved in vulnerability to alcohol consumption and reversal learning deficits in adolescent rats subjected to maternal separation, particularly in female rats. Targeting NMDAR/glycine sites may be a potential treatment option for alcohol abuse in adolescents with early maternal separation.

Early life social instability stress causes lasting cognitive decrement and elevated hippocampal stress-related gene expression

Robert E. Featherstone et al.

Summary: Early life social stress in mice can have long-term effects on behavior and cognition, including anxiety, affect, sociability, aggression, motivation, and recognition memory. These effects may be mediated by persistent changes in moderators of the stress cascade.

Novel Dopamine Transporter Inhibitor, CE-123, Ameliorates Spatial Memory Deficits Induced by Maternal Separation in Adolescent Rats: Impact of Sex

Pawel Grochecki et al.

Summary: Maternal separation is a major contributor to neurodevelopmental disorders. This study suggests that dopamine signaling plays a key role in maternal separation-induced learning disabilities. The new dopamine transporter inhibitor, CE-123, can effectively counteract the spatial learning and memory deficit caused by maternal separation in rats, particularly in females. It restores cognitive impairment and dopamine signaling in adolescent rats exposed to maternal separation.

Early life stress due to repeated maternal separation alters the working memory acquisition brain functional network

Maria Banqueri et al.

Summary: Adverse early life environments can lead to cognitive impairments, as shown in an animal model of repeated maternal separation. The study found changes in brain energy oxidative metabolism and delays in spatial working memory acquisition, indicating a need for further research on long-term effects of early stress.

Rapamycin Improves Recognition Memory and Normalizes Amino-Acids and Amines Levels in the Hippocampal Dentate Gyrus in Adult Rats Exposed to Ethanol during the Neonatal Period

Malgorzata Lopatynska-Mazurek et al.

Summary: The mTOR signaling pathway plays a crucial role in synaptic plasticity in mammals, and prenatal ethanol exposure can disrupt this pathway in the fetal hippocampus. Pre-treatment with rapamycin can reverse ethanol-induced memory deficits in adult rats, suggesting the involvement of mTORC1 in the deleterious effects of ethanol on the developing brain.

Neuroprotective Function of High Glycolytic Activity in Astrocytes: Common Roles in Stroke and Neurodegenerative Diseases

Shinichi Takahashi

Summary: Astrocytes consume large amounts of glucose and produce lactate regardless of oxygen availability, playing a crucial role in providing energy substrates for neurons and protecting them against oxidative stress. The pentose-phosphate pathway (PPP) in astrocytes, which is involved in providing reduced glutathione for neurons, is significantly more active compared to neurons. Dysfunction of astrocytic glycolysis and the PPP have been implicated in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
