Reduced immunogenicity of a live Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium vaccine in aged mice

Jessica C. Allen et al.

Summary: Non-typhoidal Salmonella (NTS) is a significant cause of foodborne infections and deaths worldwide. We have developed a live attenuated vaccine, CVD 1926, against Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium. The study found that older mice had weaker immune responses to the vaccine and mucosal responses decrease with age.

Rotavirus Strain Trends in United States, 2009-2016: Results from the National Rotavirus Strain Surveillance System (NRSSS)

Summary: This study reported the genotype distribution of group A rotaviruses (RVA) collected over a span of 20 years and found changes in genotype dominance. Vaccine strains and uncommon/unusual strains were also detected. Continuous surveillance is needed to understand the long-term effects of vaccine use on RVA epidemiology and evolutionary dynamics.

Characterization of colonization kinetics and virulence potential of Salmonella Enteritidis in chickens by photonic detection

Dinesh H. H. Wellawa et al.

Summary: The lux operon of Photorhabdus luminescens, when integrated into a dark bacterium, can be used to track the colonization of Salmonella Enteritidis (SEn) strains in chickens using bioluminescence imaging (BLI) technique. The level of colonization was determined by quantifying signal intensity and prevalence of SEn in specific organs. Mutations of SPI-1 and fur resulted in decreased colonization in the yolk sac, which correlated with BLI data.
