Transmission factors and exposure to infections at work and invasive pneumococcal disease

Summary: This study aimed to estimate and compare the incidence of invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) in the elderly in Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden. The results showed that despite high vaccination rates of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs) in children, the incidence of IPD in the elderly remained high. Therefore, direct vaccination of the elderly with approved broad coverage PCVs may be meaningful in reducing the disease burden.

Summary: This study used genomics to investigate the international links between outbreaks of vaccine preventable serotype 4 sequence type 801 in shipyards in several countries. The findings suggest that the total diversity of ST801 within the outbreaks cannot be solely explained by recent transmission alone, indicating potential international transmission between shipyards.

Pneumococcal pneumonia on the job: Uncovering the past story of occupational exposure to metal fumes and dust

Summary: The objectives of this study are to clarify the early history of risk for pneumococcal pneumonia from occupational exposure to metal fumes and dusts, and to emphasize the importance of searching older literature. The study found that from the 1890s onward, a body of literature recognized the link between Thomas slag and pneumonia in the steel industry. Researchers, mainly in Germany, also showed that workers in metal-dust-exposed occupations, especially using manganese, had a higher incidence of pneumococcal pneumonia. The study concludes that occupational or environmental inhalation of manganese, iron, or irritants may increase the risk of pneumococcal pneumonia, and highlights the need for a deeper assessment of older literature.
