Multimode Optical Fiber Beam-By-Beam Cleanup

Mario Ferraro et al.

Summary: We introduce and demonstrate all-optical beam switching in graded-index multimode optical fibers. Nonlinear coupling between orthogonally polarized seed and signal beams allows control of the spatial beam quality at the fiber output. We show that a low power control beam can significantly enhance the quality of a high-power multimode signal beam. This concept could be applied in high-power beam delivery and fiber lasers.

Universality of light thermalization in multimoded nonlinear optical systems

Qi Zhong et al.

Summary: Recent experimental studies have shown that the optical power in nonlinear optical systems evolves towards a Rayleigh-Jeans equilibrium state. While wave turbulence and four-wave mixing models were previously used to explain these results, a new paradigm based on thermodynamic principles has emerged. In exploring various nonlinear light-matter coupling effects, the authors find that the system always reaches a Rayleigh-Jeans equilibrium, even when the wave-mixing paradigm fails. These findings support a thermodynamic interpretation and open up possibilities for expanding this formalism to other disciplines in physics.

Spatiotemporal mode decomposition of ultrashort pulses in linear and nonlinear graded-index multimode fibers

Mario Zitelli et al.

Summary: We developed a spatiotemporal mode decomposition technique to analyze the power distribution of ultrashort pulses in graded-index multimode fibers. Our findings reveal that the power content of beam modes in the dispersive pulse propagation regime follows the Bose-Einstein law, which is a result of power diffusion from mode coupling. In the soliton regime, the output mode power distribution approaches the Rayleigh-Jeans law.

Observation of Light Thermalization to Negative-Temperature Rayleigh-Jeans Equilibrium States in Multimode Optical Fibers

K. Baudin et al.

Summary: This paper reports the observation of Rayleigh-Jeans thermalization of light waves to negative-temperature equilibrium states. The optical wave relaxes to the equilibrium state through its propagation in a multimode optical fiber, where high energy levels are more populated than low energy levels. Experimental results show that negative-temperature speckle beams have a nonmonotonic radial intensity profile.

Observation of photon-photon thermodynamic processes under negative optical temperature conditions

A. L. Marques Muniz et al.

Summary: Statistical mechanics states that a system with no upper bound on its internal energy should have a positive temperature. However, under certain conditions, it is possible to achieve negative temperatures, where higher-order energy states are favored. So far, observing thermodynamic processes in this regime has been challenging, but this study demonstrates isentropic expansion-compression and Joule expansion at negative optical temperatures using purely nonlinear photon-photon interactions. This photonic approach opens up possibilities for exploring all-optical thermal engines and could have implications for other bosonic systems beyond optics, such as cold atoms and optomechanics.

Thermalization of Light's Orbital Angular Momentum in Nonlinear Multimode Waveguide Systems

Fan O. Wu et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that the orbital angular momentum of a light field can be thermalized in a nonlinear cylindrical multimode optical waveguide. The distribution of power modal occupancies in thermal equilibrium is characterized by a generalized Rayleigh-Jeans distribution, which is different from the temperature associated with the longitudinal electromagnetic momentum flow of the optical field. Contrary to previous results, the ground state is not always the most populated in terms of power due to the presence of OAM.

Two octave supercontinuum generation in a non-silica graded-index multimode fiber

Zahra Eslami et al.

Summary: This study reports the generation of a two-octave supercontinuum from visible to mid-infrared in a non-silica graded-index multimode fiber. The fiber design utilizes a nanostructured core composed of two types of drawn lead-bismuth-gallate glass rods with different refractive indices, resulting in an effective parabolic index profile and increased nonlinearity compared to silica fibers. By studying the supercontinuum generation mechanisms and instabilities, the researchers found that appropriate injection conditions resulted in beam self-cleaning from nonlinear mode mixing. Experimental observations were supported by numerical simulations and demonstrated that the enhanced nonlinear refractive index of the lead-bismuth-gallate fiber yielded a significantly larger bandwidth compared to silica fibers.

Multiphoton ionization of standard optical fibers

Summary: This study investigates the multiphoton ionization phenomenon in standard optical fibers. Intense laser pulses are found to ionize the atoms in the fiber structure, leading to material modifications that affect the dynamics of the laser beam. The damage features are analyzed using optical microscopy and X-ray microtomography, and the results provide a foundation for the development of a novel glass waveguide micromachining technique in the field of glass photonics.

Interplay of Thermalization and Strong Disorder: Wave Turbulence Theory, Numerical Simulations, and Experiments in Multimode Optical Fibers

Nicolas Berti et al.

Summary: In this study, we address the problem of thermalization in a time-dependent disorder system described by the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a random potential. The nonlinearity drives the particles to thermalize to the Rayleigh-Jeans distribution, while the structural disorder relaxes the system towards a homogeneous equilibrium distribution, inhibiting thermalization. By applying the wave turbulence theory, we derive a kinetic equation that takes into account the presence of strong disorder and reveals the interplay between disorder and nonlinearity. Surprisingly, we find that a nonequilibrium process of condensation and thermalization can occur when disorder effects dominate over nonlinear effects.

Thermalization of Orbital Angular Momentum Beams in Multimode Optical Fibers

E. Podivilov et al.

Summary: We investigate the thermalization of light carrying orbital angular momentum in multimode optical fibers induced by nonlinear intermodal interactions. Based on the conservation of the angular momentum, we obtain a generalized Rayleigh-Jeans distribution of asymptotic mode composition. We confirm our predictions through numerical simulations and experiments using holographic mode decomposition of multimode beams. Our work establishes new constraints for achieving spatial beam self-cleaning and provides previously unforeseen insights into the underlying physical mechanisms.

Summary: Beam self-cleaning in graded-index multimode fibers has shown to improve nonlinear fluorescence imaging by enhancing beam brightness, enabling higher spatial resolution, and increasing the efficiency of nonlinear imaging. The associated spatiotemporal reshaping also allows for supercontinuum generation for large-band NF imaging. Experimental demonstrations have validated these findings in both microscopy and endoscopy configurations.
