Oxidative stress induced by plasma-activated water stimulates astaxanthin production in Phaffia rhodozyma

Wenshao Li et al.

Summary: In this study, a bubble discharge reactor was developed to generate plasma-activated water (PAW) to produce PAW-made yeast malt (YM) medium. Strains cultured in 15 and 30 min-treated PAW-made medium produced significantly higher amounts of carotenoids and astaxanthin due to oxidative stress induced by PAW. This study demonstrates the potential of PAW to increase astaxanthin yields for industrial-scale production.

Enhancing astaxanthin and lipid coproduction in Haematococcus pluvialis by the combined induction of plant growth regulators and multiple stresses

Hailiang Xing et al.

Summary: The combination of melatonin and putrescine enhances the production of astaxanthin (Asta) and lipids in Haematococcus pluvialis, increasing endogenous putrescine content and reducing oxidative stress levels. This strategy also upregulates carotenogenic, lipogenic, and antioxidant enzyme genes in the microalga.

Enhancing astaxanthin yield in Phaffia rhodozyma: current trends and potential of phytohormones

Christabel Nutakor et al.

Summary: Astaxanthin is a valuable ketocarotenoid with significant biological activities and economic value. Microbial production of natural astaxanthin has gained attention recently due to its applications in various industries. While productivity is currently limited, microbial production shows great potential as a sustainable and greener alternative. Phaffia rhodozyma, a yeast capable of utilizing agro-food waste, has been studied for its potential in natural astaxanthin production. Phytohormones have shown promising results in improving astaxanthin yield in yeast and algae, although research in P. rhodozyma is limited. Further studies have reported positive effects of phytohormones on carotenogenesis genes expression in this yeast.

Transcriptome analysis reveals the promoting effect of trisodium citrate on astaxanthin accumulation in Haematococcus pluvialis under high light condition

Feichao Du et al.

Summary: The addition of trisodium citrate (TSC) was found to significantly increase astaxanthin accumulation in Haematococcus pluvialis under high light stress by up-regulating the expression of genes involved in TCA cycle, glucose metabolism, astaxanthin biosynthesis, and fatty acids metabolism, as well as changing the expression of genes involved in ROS scavenging and cell wall biosynthesis. These findings provide new insights into the mechanism of TSC-induced astaxanthin biosynthesis in H. pluvialis.

Biotechnological Production of Carotenoids Using Low Cost-Substrates Is Influenced by Cultivation Parameters: A Review

Willen Silva Igreja et al.

Summary: Carotenoids are natural lipophilic pigments mainly found in plants, and can also be synthesized by fungi, some bacteria, algae, and aphids. They are used as natural replacements for artificial colors in food industries and have health benefits as antioxidants and provitamin A compounds. Biotechnological approaches for carotenoid production have the potential to exceed yields obtained from plants or chemical synthesis, with a focus on low-cost substrates.
