Global and local stiffening of ex vivo -perfused stented human thoracic aortas: A mock circulation study

Emmanouil Agrafiotis et al.

Summary: This study examined the effects of thoracic endovascular repair (TEVAR) on the biomechanical properties of the aorta. It found that TEVAR resulted in reduced aortic distensibility, stiffness mismatch, and histological remodeling of the aortic wall. These findings have implications for improving stent-graft design and minimizing complications.

Aortic Distensibility Measured by Automated Analysis of Magnetic Resonance Imaging Predicts Adverse Cardiovascular Events in UK Biobank

Marina Cecelja et al.

Summary: Automated cardiovascular magnetic resonance-derived aortic distensibility can be incorporated into routine clinical imaging and has a similar association to cardiovascular risk factors as other measures of arterial stiffness. It also predicts new-onset cardiovascular events, making it a useful tool for the measurement of vascular aging and associated cardiovascular risk.

Oversizing of self-expanding Nitinol vascular stents - A biomechanical investigation in the superficial femoral artery

Martina Bernini et al.

Summary: Despite being commonly employed in the treatment of peripheral artery disease, self-expanding Nitinol stents are still associated with a relatively high incidence of failure in the mid- and long-term. This study developed a computational model to investigate the effects of stent sizing on structural outcomes in a patient-specific scenario. The findings suggest that an oversizing ratio between 1.2 and 1.4 provides the optimal biomechanical performance, improving lumen gain, reducing incomplete stent apposition, and predicting favorable long-term fatigue performance.

The effect of the elongation of the proximal aorta on the estimation of the aortic wall distensibility

Stamatia Z. Pagoulatou et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the importance of axial stretch on compliance estimation of the proximal aortic wall, using both computational and in vivo approaches. Neglecting longitudinal strain during contraction may lead to severe underestimation of local aortic compliance, especially in individuals with increased aortic root motion. Both in silico and in vivo findings suggest the potential impact of this oversight, highlighting the need for more accurate estimations in certain populations.

In-vivo assessment of a tissue engineered vascular graft computationally optimized for target vessel compliance

Kenneth J. Furdella et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the importance of compliance matching in tissue engineered vascular grafts (TEVGs) for improved acute remodeling. Compliance matched grafts showed better performance in vivo compared to hypocompliant grafts, resulting in reduced inflammation and improved cellular infiltration. The use of computational optimization approaches in designing TEVGs enhances their mechanical properties and overall success in coronary artery bypass surgery.
