Numerical investigation of fiber orientations and homogeneity in powder bed fusion of fiber/polymer composites

Pengfei Tan et al.

Summary: The packing characteristics of fiber/polymer powder in powder bed fusion additive manufacturing have a strong influence on the mechanical behaviors of printed composite parts. A discrete element model is used to study the packing characteristics of glass fiber/polyamide 12 (PA12) powder, including fiber orientations, fiber homogeneity, and packing density. The simulation results show that the length distribution of fibers affects their packing characteristics and adjusting the fiber length can help achieve the desired anisotropic mechanical properties for composite parts.

Resolving the porosity-unmelted inclusion dilemma during in-situ alloying of Ti34Nb via laser powder bed fusion

Sheng Huang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of laser power, velocity, and profile on the porosity, inclusion content, and microstructural evolution of in-situ alloyed laser powder bed fusion manufactured Ti34Nb. It found that a specific combination of laser profile, power, velocity, and scanning strategy could result in the formation of an ideal microstructure.

Universal process diagrams for laser sintering of polymers

Summary: This study theoretically analyzes and numerically simulates the laser irradiation step and thermo-viscous flow during selective laser sintering process on polymeric materials using the smoothed particle hydrodynamics method. It introduces the concept of attenuation melt ratio (AMR) and constructs normalized process diagrams to optimize mechanical properties of materials. The predictive quality of these process windows is confirmed through assessment of mechanical properties of laser-sintered parts made of different polymers.

A numerical study on the packing quality of fibre/polymer composite powder for powder bed fusion additive manufacturing

Pengfei Tan et al.

Summary: A discrete element model was developed to simulate the packing process of fibre/polymer composite powder, analyzing the effects of powder layer thickness, roller spreading velocity, and fibre quantity on packing quality. The model suggested that increasing powder layer thickness improves packing density, while high spreading velocity and excessive fibres degrade packing quality.

Modeling the temperature, crystallization, and residual stress for selective laser sintering of polymeric powder

Fei Shen et al.

Summary: A thermomechanical model was developed to predict temperature, crystallization, stress, and strain in the selective laser sintering process for polymeric powder. The model successfully simulated the sintering and cooling process of polyamide 12, validating the melt pool depth and part deformation. The study also discussed the effects of cooling rate on strain and stress evolution.
