Modeling of Single-Process 3D-Printed Piezoelectric Sensors with Resistive Electrodes: The Low-Pass Filtering Effect

Tilen Kosir et al.

Summary: Three-dimensional printing by material extrusion allows for the production of fully functional dynamic piezoelectric sensors in a single process, eliminating the need for additional assembly steps. However, these 3D-printed sensors have higher electrical resistance due to material limitations, resulting in a limited usable frequency range. This research presents an analytical model for determining the usable frequency range of 3D-printed piezoelectric sensors with resistive electrodes, and experimental results confirm the accuracy of the model. This research opens up possibilities for designing the electrical and dynamic characteristics of future intelligent dynamic systems printed in a single process.

One-Shot 3D Printed Soft Device Actuated Using Metal-Filled Channels and Sensed with Embedded Strain Gauge

Antonio Pavone et al.

Summary: In this article, multimaterial extrusion (M-MEX) technology is used for the first time to fabricate a three-dimensional printed soft electromagnetic (EM) actuator, which is equipped with internal channels filled with soft liquid metal (Galinstan) and an embedded strain gauge. The main features of this work include one-shot fabrication, a smart structure equipped with a sensor unit, and scalability. The actuator demonstrated good performance in bending angle, relative error, and sensor sensitivity when tested with a commercial magnet. Additionally, two more examples of soft robots and actuators show the potential of this approach. The article highlights the advantages of extrusion-based additive manufacturing over traditional actuation mechanisms for EM soft robots.

Single-process 3D-printed stacked dielectric actuator

Tibor Barsi Palmic et al.

Summary: This research demonstrates the first monolithic 3D-printed stacked dielectric actuators (SDEAs) using a commercially accessible extrusion 3D printer and thermoplastic filaments. The challenges of single-process fabrication of the dielectric layer and electrodes, repeatability and reliability of the 3D-printed thin dielectric layer, and layer stacking were successfully addressed. Four actuators with different active areas and stacked active layers were 3D printed and their functionality was demonstrated through dynamic electromechanical characterization. These actuators show promise for applications requiring high-frequency resonators or high controllability in the sub-resonance region.

Summary: In this work, a novel solid-liquid nanocomposite-based piezoelectric nanogenerator (SL-PENG) was developed by using 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorodecyltriethoxysilane (FDTS) droplets as liquid fillers. The FDTS nanodroplets were uniformly distributed in a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) matrix through solvent selection and solvent evaporation protocols, improving the toughness of the polymer matrix. The SL-PENG demonstrated superior performance compared to other PENGs, generating a high peak-to-peak voltage and current, and showing potential applications in the field of IoT.
