Extrusion nozzle design and print parameter selections for 3D concrete printing

Nan Zhang et al.

Summary: This study presents theoretical formulations for concrete extrusion resistance as a function of nozzle parameters. Results show that the extrusion resistances are related to the extrusion velocity of concrete and the cone angle and length of the nozzle. Based on the results, a customized nozzle was used to investigate the effects of print parameters on printing quality. It was found that the reduction of printing speed increased the limits of layer thickness.

Effects of thermal process conditions on crystallinity and mechanical properties in material extrusion additive manufacturing of discontinuous carbon fibre reinforced polyphenylene sulphide composites

Yahui Lyu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the thermal behaviour of discontinuous carbon fibre reinforced polyphenylene sulphide (CF/PPS), additively manufactured by material extrusion. The effects of thermal process conditions on the degree of crystallinity, oxidation crosslinking and mechanical properties of CF/PPS are studied from filament fabrication to annealing treatment. By optimizing the screw extrusion parameters, the thermal analysis of the fabricated filaments is performed. The influence of crosslinking reactions on crystallinity process and mechanical properties is determined by investigating the printing conditions.

Comprehensive investigation of reclaimed carbon fibre reinforced polyamide (rCF/PA) filaments and FDM printed composites

Ning Su et al.

Summary: The effects of fibre content on the thermal and mechanical properties as well as porosity of reclaimed carbon fibre reinforced polyamide-6 (rCF/PA) filaments were analyzed. It was found that the samples with 20 wt% and 30 wt% fibre content exhibited the best mechanical performance, with the optimal 20 wt% samples showing a significantly higher tensile strength and modulus compared to unreinforced PA. However, the mechanical properties of the 40 wt% samples dropped significantly due to factors such as fountain flow, poor fibre alignment, and high porosity.

Jiahui Li et al.

Summary: This paper comprehensively reviews the mechanical properties and deformation mechanisms of discontinuous and continuous fiber-reinforced composites fabricated by various additive manufacturing techniques. The effects of fiber type, orientation, weight/volume fraction, printing path, and stacking sequence on the mechanical properties of additively manufactured composites are discussed. Additionally, the applications of additively manufactured composites, the main challenges of current additive manufacturing techniques, and recommendations for future work are presented.

High strength carbon-fiber reinforced polyamide 6 composites additively manufactured by screw-based extrusion

Xiping Li et al.

Summary: In this study, high strength PA6-CF composite parts are additively manufactured by directly feeding composite pellets into a 3D printer. The effects of CF content on the rheological and mechanical properties of the composites are investigated. Mechanical tests show that CF significantly enhances the strength of the 3D-printed composites, and the results are in agreement with the analytical model.

Fiber Formation of Printed Carbon Fiber/Poly (Ether Ether Ketone) with Different Nozzle Shapes

A. Matschinski et al.

Summary: This paper focuses on the investigation of an uninterrupted nozzle system for printing high-performance thermoplastic PEEK with short fiber reinforcements. The custom-made nozzle design with variable outlet angle is presented, and the fiber length distribution and orientation in the printed material are studied. Results show that decreasing nozzle angles lead to smoother inner surface and lower fiber damage, reducing the shortening of fibers caused by the printing process. Despite some disadvantages, the enhanced flow profile for small angles proves beneficial overall.

Fibre bridging and nozzle clogging in 3D printing of discontinuous carbon fibre-reinforced polymer composites: coupled CFD-DEM modelling

Hao Zhang et al.

Summary: The study reveals that nozzle clogging tends to occur when the fiber length and/or fiber volume fraction are increased; using a polymer matrix with a lower viscosity can effectively eliminate the clogging issue when printing composites with relatively short fibers; the fiber length dominates when long fibers are used and clogging is largely independent of the viscosity of the polymer matrix.
