Automated image segmentation of 3D printed fibrous composite micro-structures using a neural network

K. Nefs et al.

Summary: In this study, a new automated image segmentation method based on deep convolutional neural network is proposed to effectively identify micro-structural objects of 3D printed fibre-reinforced materials. The method uses training data created from a physical specimen, and the micro-structure is obtained from X-ray micro-computed tomography scanning. The neural network is trained to identify fibres in arbitrary directions, eliminating the need for manual annotation by human experts. The method is capable of accurately identifying complex micro-structures with arbitrarily distributed and oriented fibres.

Automatic segmentation and fibre orientation estimation from low resolution X-ray computed tomography images of 3D woven composites

Yannick Pannier et al.

Summary: In this study, different methods for automtic segmentation of microtomographic images in 3D woven carbon fibre composite materials are compared. Dense neural network approach fed with features based on the monogenic signal and features learned by a convolutional neural network are used. The monogenic signal with structure tensor approach is proposed for determining local fibre orientations in the composite. The best result is obtained by merging the monogenic and convolutional neural network features in a combination of the signal-based approach and the learning-based approach.

Stochastic semi-analytical modeling of reinforced filaments for additive manufacturing

E. Polyzos et al.

Summary: This study presents a new stochastic modeling approach to address challenges in micromechanical modeling of short-fiber composites. It introduces a stochastic generation technique based on kernel density estimation to save time and effort in fiber extraction, and a novel semi-analytical approach to consider multiple fibers while reducing computational effort. The approach is demonstrated on recycled poly(ethylene terephthalate) filaments reinforced with recycled short carbon fibers for additive manufacturing, showing similar predictions of elastic properties using only 40-50 fibers compared to a direct modeling approach with 1050 fibers, and close agreement with experimental data.

Modeling elastic properties of 3D printed composites using real fibers

E. Polyzos et al.

Summary: The article investigates the microstructural morphology of 3D printed composites and the effect of microstructural irregularities on macrostructural elastic response through stochastic homogenization modeling. A novel methodology is introduced to generate realistic and ideal contours of carbon fibers, along with a method to generate single- and multiple-fiber representative volume elements in finite element software for approximating effective elastic properties. The results of numerical and semi-analytical modeling show good agreement with analytical models.

Computer Vision for Autonomous UAV Flight Safety: An Overview and a Vision-based Safe Landing Pipeline Example

Efstratios Kakaletsis et al.

Summary: Flight safety is a crucial issue in UAV navigation, especially when it comes to autonomous drones and UAV swarms. Although the main aspects of autonomous UAV technologies are well-covered, ensuring safe flying in unstructured environments, such as avoiding crowds and emergency landing, are often overlooked. This overview focuses on the importance of computer vision in addressing these safety issues and introduces a computer vision-based UAV flight safety pipeline.

Geometrical and deep learning approaches for instance segmentation of CFRP fiber bundles in textile composites

Yuriy Sinchuk et al.

Summary: Segmentation of micro-Computed Tomography (mu CT) images of textile composites is crucial for modeling the material at the mesoscale, but accurate segmentation of fiber bundles in carbon fiber reinforced textile composites remains challenging. Existing segmentation approaches perform well under ideal conditions but struggle in practical applications, leading to the proposal of two new methodologies for splitting tow instances based on geometrical analysis and deep learning prediction. The deep learning-based method is trained using synthetic images to avoid the costly human annotation step.

Characterisation of void and fiber distribution in 3D printed carbon-fiber/PEEK using X-ray computed tomography

S. Sommacal et al.

Summary: The study found that the 3D printing process did not eliminate the voids present in the feedstock filament, and the variation of key printing parameters had minor effects on void content in the printed samples. However, the depositional nature of the printing process strongly influenced the internal geometry of the samples.

Summary: In this research, a novel and fully automated method for extracting yarn geometrical features in woven composites is proposed, aiming to achieve direct parametrization of textile reinforcement. By using two deep neural network architectures (U-Net and Mask R-CNN), the method is accurate and robust for performing yarn instance segmentation on CT images, as demonstrated by quantitative and qualitative analyses.
