Nondeterministic multiobjective optimization of 3D printed ceramic tissue scaffolds

Ali Entezari et al.

Summary: Despite advances in bone scaffold design optimization, their functionality remains suboptimal due to uncertainties caused by the manufacturing process. A novel multi-objective robust optimization approach is proposed to minimize the effects of uncertainties on the optimized design. This study presents the first non-deterministic optimization of tissue scaffold, shedding light on the significant topic of scaffold design and additive manufacturing.

Multi-objective design optimization of 3D micro-architected implants

Eric Garner et al.

Summary: Recent advances in 3D printable micro-architected materials have opened up unprecedented possibilities for highly tailored orthopaedic implants. This study presents computational methods to synthesize patient-specific implants with heterogeneous micro-architecture, aiming to minimize the risks of load-induced interface fracture and post-operative bone remodelling. The optimized implant designs demonstrate significant improvements in bone remodelling and interface fracture risk compared to conventional solid implant designs.

Bone remodeling following mandibular reconstruction using fibula free flap

Keke Zheng et al.

Summary: This study investigates bone remodelling responses to mandibulectomy by developing an algorithm that incorporates patient-specific longitudinal data. The study aims to simulate bone remodelling activity in the conjunction region with a fibula free flap reconstruction and compare the long-term outcomes of different fixation plate designs. The results show a decrease in overall bone density over time, except in the docking site where bone apposition occurs after a decrease in bone density. Different screw positioning does not significantly influence bone remodelling outcomes.

Mechanical cloak via data-driven aperiodic metamaterial design

Liwei Wang et al.

Summary: This study presents a systematic, data-driven design approach to create mechanical cloaks using a large precomputed unit cell database. The method allows for the design of cloaks with different boundary conditions, loadings, shapes, and numbers of voids, resulting in better cloaking performance and versatility compared to conventional fixed-shape solutions. Experimental measurements on additively manufactured structures confirm the validity of the proposed approach. The research demonstrates the benefits of data-driven approaches in quickly responding to new design scenarios and resolving computational challenges associated with multiscale designs of functional structures.

Design of graded lattice sandwich structures by multiscale topology optimization

Mi Xiao et al.

Summary: Graded lattice sandwich structures (GLSSs) can achieve superior structural performances through continuously-varying lattice configurations and properties in space. This study introduces a design method using multiscale topology optimization, reducing computational burden and ensuring manufacturability. Numerical examples and bending tests demonstrate that GLSSs are stiffer and have larger natural frequencies compared to uniform lattice sandwich structures.

Optimisation of three-dimensional hierarchical structures with tailored lattice metamaterial anisotropy

Lei Zhu et al.

Summary: This paper presents a new framework for optimizing three-dimensional hierarchical structures with tailored relative densities and anisotropy of lattice metamaterials. Numerical homogenization and artificial neural network based surrogate models are used to achieve the optimization, showing that tailored anisotropic lattice metamaterials outperform traditional topology optimization and quasi-isotropic lattice meta materials in structural efficiency.
