Ferrimagnetic spintronics

Se Kwon Kim et al.

Summary: Ferrimagnets, composed of multiple antiferromagnetically coupled magnetic elements, offer advantages of both ferromagnets and antiferromagnets, including easy control of magnetization by external field, faster dynamics than ferromagnets, and potential for high-density devices. This Review provides a summary of recent progress in ferrimagnetic spintronics, focusing on functionalities such as spin transport, spin texture dynamics, and all-optical switching.

Unconventional Spin Pumping and Magnetic Damping in an Insulating Compensated Ferrimagnet

Yan Li et al.

Summary: This study reports the unconventional spin pumping and magnetic damping phenomena observed in an insulating compensated ferrimagnet Gd3Fe5O12. The divergence of the nonlocal effective magnetic damping induced by spin pumping close to the compensation temperature in GdIG/Cu/Pt heterostructures is identified, and the coherent and incoherent spin currents generated by spin pumping and the spin Seebeck effect undergo a distinct direction change with the variation of temperature. These findings broaden the conventional paradigm of the ferromagnetic spin pumping model and open new opportunities for exploring ferrimagnetic magnonic devices.

Large Tunable Perpendicular Magnetic Anisotropy in Y3-xTmxFe5O12 (x=0-3) Epitaxial Films with Minor Changes in Switching Current

He Bai et al.

Summary: We demonstrate that substituted rare-earth iron garnets can exhibit perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) and have the potential to be used in spintronics devices with tunable PMA. By analyzing the structural and transport properties of the films, we show that the PMA field can be tuned within a large range while the switching current density remains nearly constant.

Giant magnon spin conductivity in ultrathin yttrium iron garnet films

X-Y Wei et al.

Summary: This study reports a giant magnon conductivity in thin yttrium iron garnet films. By reducing the number of occupied two-dimensional subbands from a large number to a few, a transition from three-dimensional to two-dimensional magnon transport is achieved. The high conductivity obtained offers opportunities for developing low-dissipation magnon-based spintronic devices.

Strongly heat-assisted spin-orbit torque switching of a ferrimagnetic insulator

Zheyu Ren et al.

Summary: The study investigates the magnetization switching behaviors in ferrimagnetic insulators and heavy metal heterostructures, revealing the influence of spin-orbit torque (SOT) and heating effects. It demonstrates the strong heat-assisted SOT switching above magnetization compensation temperature and the magnetization-dependent SOT efficiency in the presence of a titled external field, paving the way for spintronic devices based on magnetic insulators.

Spin-orbit torques in heavy metal/ferrimagnetic insulator bilayers near compensation

Lin Liu et al.

Summary: This study reports the investigation of SOT in FMI near compensation tuned by temperature. The experiment shows that SOT generation is significantly enhanced near the compensation temperature due to the decrease in net magnetization. The effective spin Hall angle in Pt/GdIG bilayer films is estimated to be around 0.0073, with little dependence on temperature.

Optimized growth of compensated ferrimagnetic insulator Gd3Fe5O12 with a perpendicular magnetic anisotropy*

Heng-An Zhou et al.

Summary: In this paper, the authors investigated the optimized growth conditions of compensated ferrimagnetic insulator GdIG films, aiming to achieve a strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and a flat surface. Through experiments, they found that choosing a suitable growth temperature and different single crystalline garnet substrates can lead to a surface roughness approaching 0.15 nm and enhanced perpendicular magnetic anisotropy.
